The engine I am rebuilding has a painted flywheel. I do not think the symptomes requiring the rebuild had anything to do with the flywheel paint no burnt electronics, upper bearing housing in great shape.

just douse it with a good fresh water rinse and then coat with WD-40 after every use in salt. And, not just the flywheel - everything. That'll keep everything healthy for years to come.

That brings up a question I have regarding cleaning an old engine. My 1975 has decades of crude, oil, grease, etc. built up under the cowling and since I am doing all this work on it, I would like to clean it up. I have shot a little carb cleaner here and there but used sparingly because I don't want to get any near electrical tape (erase the sticky!), wire harnesses, seals, bearings, etc. I would like to just get the toothbrush out with some non-caustic degreaser (we sell) and just get all that crude out. Is it okay to do this and also use some high-pressure (electric not gas-powered) water to blast out all the crude? Are there any areas to steer clear of or special precautions?

You probably want to put some saran wrap over the carb intake. Other than that, blast away.

The foaming engine cleaner is pretty good stuff. You'll also have better luck if you can use hot/warm water to clean up.

Most newer flywheels are painted on the top, but you may want to use an aluminum primer on the aluminum surface first. I like the Mercury Phantom Black spray engine paint (25350) by Moeller.

One of the best cleaners i have used inside the cowling is Goo Gone..it melts away old fuel and oil and will not hurt the paint..
