My warning buzzer goes on when in neutral. When in gear buzzer goes off. Battery is good, oil level good. No blockage in the cooling system. Anyone have any thoughts. Less than 20 hours on the engine.

can you post a complete model number?
the 150 was made in many versions over the years, but I think I know the problem :)

The boat and engine are brand new. The boat is a Pioneer Cape Island.

Re: Yamaha 150 buzzer problem

appearently this is not a US market motor as the model # is to short.
however for the US market since about 06 the engine filter cup has a water detect switch.if the cup has water in it the alarm sounds but only in nuetral, dont ask me why the engineers figguring that one out must have had sake for lunch.
look on the engine filters, if they have 2 wires they have water detect switches, if the red ring is floating you have water, if its not odds are you have a defective detect switch. unplug it and test the engine again.

ok, if your using the cover of the owners manual it wont give the full model number.
but its close enough, check your water detect switches.
we have had some issues of them being defective and giving false detect readings.
what guages are on the dash ?

Re: Yamaha 150 buzzer problem

I have had the exact same problem at 17 hours new. The alarm goes off when it is in neutral only, it stops when in gear.
I spoke to the mechanics and they said wait until my first oil change, but they thought it was the tilt detect mechanism (without looking at it). I would be intersted to see if the first poster found the actual problem.
I will not be using my boat or cant check it until July 1.
I will post back if that was the problem .

start a new thread, yes the original posters issue was resolved.
but thread hijacking gets confusing
I have no idea what engine you have, not even if its a yamaha.
if its a yamaha then you have 2 problems, first one is your dealership is clueless.
NO alarms for tilt or trim, period.
I would advise quickly correcting the first problem.
next place you try look for current fuel systems and electrical systems certifications on the wall. a master tech cert would be nice.
look on your engine, pay ttention to the fuel filter cup, if it has wires coming off the bottom it has a detect switch, if its above about an 04 model the system WONT alarm if in gear. will ONLY alarm if in nuetral.
my opinion? very stupid design, however engineers rarely contact us in the field.
carefully inspect the filter cup for water the red ring,or black float will float if water is present or you will see a seperation line in the cup.
if the cup is clear and nothing is floating unplug the filter sensor and retest.
we have seen some issues with false detects due to faulty sensors.
use the yamaha dealer locator function, it will list if a dealership near you has a master tech.
