An 84 Lemon

I've found what seams to be a major problem with my '84 evinrude.
There has been oil leaking from one of the top spark plugs, so I tightened it slightly and got that awful feeling that it might be stripped. I removed it and found that it is a larger size than the other newly replaced plugs. My guess is that someone stripped the original and tapped a larger thread. This is now also stripped and thats why oil is leaking and I'm assuming this is contributing to the misfiring and poor performance.

So guys my question is what can I do to the new replacement plug to make a good seal in stripped threads.

Thanks for all the help.

Here's a pick of the two plugs. The larger on came out of the top starboard plug, that's the one that is leaking. It's a 235hp 1984.

Having trouble posting the pic

Well, I guess I can't see how a stripped spark plug hole makes a 24-year-old outboard a lemon. It's just an old outboard that needs repair. New heads are available. Old heads can be welded up and re-drilled and re-tapped. Used heads in good condition can be found.

Sounds to me like an excellent motor to have lasted these 24 years. If it were mine, I'd fix it back up and go on using it.

i'll give you $10.00 for your lemon. a helicoil could possibly fix your problem, or just simply replace the head, which is a better fix.

Betcha he has an 18mm plug in that hole. It would now be too big for a helicoil. If that is so he needs a new (or replacement) head.

Say, Cunningham. Just tell us the make and numbers that are printed on the spark plugs.

Re: An 84 Lemon

It gets a little frustrating, but I'm back on the quest for fixing up the perfact boat.
I live in the Bahamas, and it's hard to find anything here. I went to the shop tonight and got a new plug and discovered that it was a helicoil. I bought the kit with the tap and now I think I take the head off, retap the hole, reassemble and try the new plug and helicoil. Old plug is a champion L77JC4

Next question, The spark plug wire goes to a small black devise...Coil? and then there is another wire that comes off that. One of those wires is missing its boot on the end. Can you guys tell me what this is called?

Thanks for the help, I wouldn't be doing half this stuff without you guys.

the wire goes to the power pack, (brain) get a boot on that wire.

Re: An 84 Lemon

I tried to get the head off... two bolts are stripped and one broke, down at the threads. All the rest are out.
I'm going to try drilling out the stripped bolts. I think this will allow me to pull the head off and then twist out broken bolts with vise grips.

Any better ideas?

Sounds like a decent plan. If you can get some left-handed bits you may just loosen up the broken bolts enough to spin them out in the process.

I've got more problems now. I can't get the head gasket that I need, so I bolted the head back down and reconnected everything. Now one of the bolts has what appears to be water sparaying from it. It doesn't look like fuel. How could this be?

You have loosened the head gasket. You will need to replace it.

I wouldn't use a thread extractor on the bust studs, I'd use left hand threaded drill bits.

Re: An 84 Lemon

Any one know how much torque to put on these bolts? I got the new gasket, and almost have the head off.

One head gasket $26.50
One Shipping and handling fee $97.00
One more handling fee $12.00
One customs duty charge $73.00
Equals....
One poor, happy fisherman.

I did some damage to the surface of the head and the block, is there a gasket sealer I can use to make sure I get a good seal when I bolt down the head gasket?
