A "common sense" financial planning book. Showing especially the power of compound interest, and the importance of saving SOMETHING starting early. Develop a saving and investing habit as soon as possible, (showing them the possibilities of a very rich retirement if they stick to it) and it might be the best gift they ever get.

An aluminum covered cake pan filled with post it notes, an extension chord, rubber bands, paper clips, pens, Majic Markers, a book of stamps, some dish washing soap, a few hand towels and a few kitchen utensils. They had not invented Post It Notes when I graduated high school, yet to this day I still have the cake pan and the extension chord from the gift that my loving aunt gave to me.

I will see her tomorrow morning and remind her of my gratitude for the things I needed in setting up my own household.

I'm here to tell you no "prolly" about it. If you get started NOW, not tomorrow, (because it ends up being 20 years of tomorrow) you'll be waaaaay ahead of the pack.

I had the alarm clock by the bed and would turn it off and fall back to sleep. When I'd eventually re-awaken, I'd never remember havin turned it off.
Then, I put it across the room and the same thing would happen.
Lastly, I put it inside a toy bank with a combination lock, and put that across the room . . . I'd get up and shake the darn thing until it stopped ringing and couldn't recall it.

Long ago, but I remember.

Considering only about 30% of all college grads get a job related to what they major in I would give a detailed vocational appt test so you can focus on what you have true ability to do not just something YOU THINK YOU WANT TO DO LATER.

good point, my degree is in accounting, have never worked a day in that field. although, it helped in the other fields i worked in. i have never balanced my personal check book.

We gave our kids a contract to sign.They would get 4 years of college education on our expense,BUT if they'd quit or perform below their capabilities for no good reason,they would have to pay back every last penny + interest.
They signed it, hated us for it then and love us for it now.
My youngest son is holding out for a better deal,being the baby and his mother having a hard time seeing her last baby grow into a man.

Most campuses have WiFi now.......my parents bought me a laptop......six years later and I still use it.
