Wrong Gasket????

The gasket between my manifold and riser "broke-through"........alowing raw water to enter the fresh water sid of my FWC system.......this was my problem......not a bad heat exchanger!!!!!

When I built the engine (Rapido Vortec) I replaced the manifolds/risers with a GLM kit I purchased from ebasicpower. When ordering online they ask you if you have a FWC system and they sen you a different "block-off" gasket. The gasket below in an Osco p/n......

http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/pc/OSC8503-GB//Riser+Gasket,+Blank+for+Mercruiser

This is just a "paper" gasket, didn't seem right when I put it together put I used it anyway..........apparently it got water logged and broke down.....this is what I am summizing......what a mistake!! I could have blown my new engine!

I will post a pic tomorrow...........this stinks.

I now know the Merc P/N is 27-860231..........I called GLM and this is what they gave me.

Re: Wrong Gasket????

Still the wrong PN Tony, have a look at this 99 service bulletin.
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Bullet/99/99_10.pdf

The block off gasket has a SS plate between the graphite coated surfaces. Much better setup that the cheap aftermarket paper.
The new PN (since Merc changed numbering systems a year ago) is now 8637251

Re: Wrong Gasket????

OEM Merc doesn't use a seperate plate, the gasket has one made into it.

Ayuh,..... Tony,
Did you catch the thread I posted a couple months ago about how Unflat My GLMs were,..??
Search threads started by Me,+ have a Look

You might want to drag a Flat File accross the gasket surfaces of your's,+ See if your's are Flat Enough......

Re: Wrong Gasket????

Just finished installing the new (correct) gaskets..........

I did drag a file across the surfaces to make sure!

Everything seems back to normal...............feel like I dodged a bullet.

Now back to completing breakin...........

Re: Wrong Gasket????

Yes Don..........I am quite relieved.

The new gaskets are defifintly better than the paper...........but I forgot about the stainless steel plate............

Just glad I didn't loose the engine...........
