I bought a bayliner with a Mercury 125 new in 2003 (it was a 2001 125hp elpto). Initially it had the problem of not being able to go above idle speed. I brought it back to the Bayliner dealer and ultimately the Mercury factory had to help the local mechanics fix the problem as a warrenty repair. I did not pay much attention then but understood it to be a defective electrical issue. Now I have the same problem.

Recently I called mercury, their records indicate: ignition plate harness, trigger, engine wire harness and solenoid. I have no clue which was the fix, but would appreciate any feedback as it may help me diagnose my issues.

Any feedback would be appreciated

Thanks
James

James,

What happens when you open the throttle in gear, does the engine just hang there at an idle, with no change in speed or sound.

Without more details it is difficult to direct you, start with the throttle cable, engine off, does the throttle open fully?

Does the ignition timer plate rotate as the throttle is opening?

Re: mercury 125 won't rev up past idle speed

Luckily I noticed the manual diagram showing the stainless steel bar connecting the throttle arm (or control lever) to the throttle cam was wrong.

some how the bar popped out of its correct position which prevented the accelerator pump from operating. It took a great deal of force to get it back in, but this should do the trick.

I could'nt have figured it out without reading the the threads from this site, where I began to understand how the systems functioned, then looking at the manual & diagrams the solution was obvious

Thanks to all
