this is more of a general opion question that crosses io/b and o/b so i put it here. if it needs moved sorry for inconvenience
has any one tried the sterndive engineering drives that i-boats has been advertising lately?
they seem to be very competive in price as well as a 3 three year warrranty?
you can just about buy one cheaper than the price for parts to do your own work the way i read the add.
any thoughts or opinions?

A couple years ago I replaced an outdrive on a 4.3L alpha 1 with an SEI unit. Worked fine and was way cheaper than having the old one rebuilt.

Re: sterndrive engineering drives?

I've had a lower half sei for the past year, shifts well and hasn't missed a beat. the gears aren't lapped on install, so you have to "break it in" and put up with some gear whine for a little while, but after that (was under 10 hours in my case) it qieted down. Also you'll get vewry fine metal out with the lube changes at first as the gears wear in. I just changed the lube every couple 5 hours or so of running until the metal wasn't there anymore...

I know other people that have the same drives and wouldn't hesitate to buy another myself.

Re: sterndrive engineering drives?

Replaced my broken Alpha I Gen I (whole drive, upper and lower unit) with an SE106 in September of 2006. Worked perfectly all last summer (about 20 hours worth of running) and for the couple of trips I have made it to the lake this month. Gear oil looked fine when I changed it this spring. I highly recommend them.

As a side note, I did not physically change the drive myself, I paid a local shop to do the work. Mine was the first SE drive they had installed, however since then they have sold another 5 or 6 of them. No problems reported so far on any of them.

at that price i'm thinking of buying one to keep on hand for a spare if i hit or break mine.
you could be up and running in a matter of hours ,not days....
