Hey I have a late 80's johnson 55 that runs great when I can get it going. I have rebuilt the carbureator but still have problems. I can start it up but it seems to idle a little slow it will frequently die if i let i just let it idle, the warm up lever is soft and does little to rev it up. The real problem is that when I start it and put it in gear it usually dies. To get it going I have to hit the electric choke when causes it to almost die then really rev up then I have to quickly put it in gear to get it going, even then 9 times out of 10 it will die. Once I get it going though it runs fine, what could be the problem. Thanks for the help.

Re: Dies in gear

Start with the basics, it's a CYA thing. A motor needs compression, the right amount of fuel and a hot enough spark at the right time, no magic, it works.

Check compression to ensure that the motor is mechanically sound.

Search this site for a homemade spark tester and build your own, follow the directions and test spark.

Once you are sure that both of those pass then move on to fuel, you have cleaned the carb already, hopefully all that is left is to link and synch, adjustments to the timing and carb settings to dial in your motor. again search this site for the directions spelled out step by step.

Good Luck.

Like I said, no magic, test twice, adjust to the letter, add water and stir, it will work.

Re: Dies in gear

do a link and sync, before making these adjustments throttle cable and shift cable should be disconnected and carb cam follower loosened so as not to be in contact w/ throttle cam ,set pickup timing then readjust follower to correct spot on throttle cam
