What does 25XD mean?

I am in the process of trying to find a used outboard motor to replace my stolen outboard. I have seen ads for a 1987 and 1988 Mercury 25XD 25 hp. What does the XD mean?

A 1985 Mercury catalog says the "XD stands for extra durable".

The catalog talked about 18XD and 25XD having water pumps with longer vanes and stainless water pump housings among other features. I am pretty sure subsequent 25's had all of these features and the XD designation was dropped later.

These are great motors.

Yes xd is extra durable. My friend has an 18 hp that we used the hell out of with no real trouble. It used to push a heavy loaded valco with duck hunting gear and all. it was a work horse. Good motor.
