poor start low power 6 horse johnson

have 1979 six horse johnson. difficult to start. has poor power and will achieve only one-third to one-half power. top cyclinder not firing. Is the coil the problem?

One of the coils could be the problem, riverhawk. They are reputed to die of old age.

Have you confirmed that the top plug is not getting spark?

Other things that could kill a cylinder are reeds and compression.

Assuming a defective plug has been eliminated as a possibility is it possible to swap the coils over to confirm that it is the coil?
