Hello All

I came across this forum today while researching a little motor, seems like a nice place. I think its a 81 the model number is j4wcic. The little motor has a 110 degree lower unit, ( you now it points down a little) are there any advantages are dis advantages with that kind of lower unit? Will it require a hard to find water pump and gasket set? I had his brother evinrude with a 90 degree lower unit in the early eightys. In these little cypress lakes and bayous that motor would just go and go.
Will that down pointing lower unit do well in shallow snaggy water?
Were these little outboards with built in fuel tanks and no transmissions built by Johnson/Evinrude are someone else?

Thank You

That is indeed a '81 model (CI = 81) and the W indicates that it has a Weedless drive unit.

Maybe the parts lists at Crowley Marine will indicate the availability of parts. Otherwise the BRP Parts Catalog will ID all the parts for you and enable you to compare the part numbers with a standard unit. I expect many of the parts will be the same.

Thank You Vic.S

After another search i found a lot of information on the motor and links to diagrams and manuals even more information. This site is a very powerful tool and contains a wealth of resources.
So i guess tomorrow i will lay my 25 bucks down and start restoring a 4hp. weedless johnson stump jumper.

That weedless lower unit was made for many, many moons. They are all over the place. Parts should be no problem.

Both my 3's have the 110 weedless LU. I wish they were 90's, oh well.

Re: 4hp. johnson 110 degree lower unit

i have a mid 70's 4hp johnson weedless that i have used duck hunting for years. it's an amazing little machine. it goes through weeds, moss, reeds, bounces over logs and just keeps going. maybe in open water a 90 degree lower unit would go better but in the weeds i never have to stop and clean the prop off. i have jummed enough weeds in front of the water intake to start to overheat it and had to clean those weeds off but not the prop. i wish it had forward and reverse as iget older because turning it around to go backwards is getting harder but it also requiers less maintanice. years ago i saw some game wardens with a 6hp with weedless drive that had FNR but i have never seen one for sale. but you have yourself a great little motor.
