I have exhaust smoke coming out in the area shown in red circle in picture? I am new to outboards and don't know whether it should be coming out there or not! Should I be concerned or is it normal?
Thanks!

BTW: this is a Evinrude 1970 60HP Triumph 60073D

Re: Exhaust Problem

That appears to be the idle relief port. Exhaust and maybe water will come out of that port when you are idleing in neutral.

Thanks for your reply!
Are you sure it is relief port? I read about an exhaust gasket that will allow water into the cylinders if it is gone! I don't want to harm the motor by ignoring a problem if it is fixable! I am a newbie so I'm sorry if questioning your reply pisses you off!

Re: Exhaust Problem

Those ports are below the powerhead. Water therefore could not enter the powerhead from those holes. The exhaust exits those holes since it is not pressurized enough to get out the prop hub.

The gasket you are talking about would be on the powerhead itself, usually under the exhaust cover

exhaust relief ports, when idling, also you should have water mist or droplets coming out there. as it acts as the tale tell that the water pump is pumping.

Re: Exhaust Problem

Thanks for the reassurance!
I have lots of exhaust and water coming out at the prop when running. The only time the smoke comes out at the point shown is when the motor cranks and fails to start! I can't idle the motor any lower than 1200 rpm right now without it dying. I'm checking the timing, doing a link/sync and idle needle adjustment tonight. Hoping this will solve my problems with idle.
Thanks guys! Wealth of info from this site and it's participants!
