Ok, after having the heads done/valve job/ and putting it all back together with new manifolds/risers, themostat, hoses, water circ pump, impeller, plugs, dist cap/rotor...ran it on the muffs, it purred like a kitten but noticed the temp gauge kept going up after usually stopping at mid point, 145 deg. Risers were cool but all other hoses were HOT! Checked thermo and it was open, put old one back in cuz it worked fine with it before. Made sure all hoses were on correctly and tried it again, still getting too hot.
Tried not to panic, came in and got on here and read old posts on overheating and got lots of ideas on things to check. Next day I start at top of checklist, outdrive inlet not clogged, no impeller debris I could see, turned it over and getting lots of water pumping to motor... last thing on list, TIMING! Supposed to be at 8 deg. btdc and it was between 0 and 4, found the clamp bolt was loose so obviously it moved the couple times I ran it. Put it back to 8 and ran it for 15 min., Bingo! Temp holding at just below 145! iboats saves the day!:D
