How hot is too hot ???

I have a 1990 225 Johnson on a 23' Pro-line that has an aftermarket (Faria) temp gage. When Idling the indicated temp comes quickly up to 200F and stays there. When I plane the boat, the temp goes to about 240. 250 is the max on the gage. My question is does this seem too hot? and is this gage accurate? With indicated temp at 240 the powerhead is not hot to the touch and will not melt a 180F temp stick. The water from the telltale is warm but not hot enough to burn my hand, and I see no steam in my exhaust. My hot horn has never sounded, but you never know if they work or not. Has anyone had a similar problem? Is this a problem? Is there a way to make my temp gage more accurate? Thanks

It sounds like you have a Faria inboard gauge attached to the wrong sender on the engine.

You can test the temperature switches for the horn because they are easily removed from the looper cylinder heads; you just need some hot cooking oil, a reasonably good meat thermometer and an ohmmeter.

The tan wires leading from the temperature switches have a disconnect a few inches from the head. If you ground the control end of the wire, with your key in run position, you should hear the horn and confirm that the wiring is OK.

For your own peace of mind, I would recommend that you get a new complete temperature gauge kit with the correct sender.
