I need a little bit of skeg work done on my 88 110 Johnson and theres also a chunk missing out of one one of the fins right where the trim tab mounts.
I was going to take it in and have it fixed but I came upon a rebuilt / refurbished lower unit housing (never installed) at a flea market and the guy wanted 75 bucks cdn for it. I figure the bill for fixing what I have will likely exceed the cost of the refurb unit so I am considering buying it. I dont have a service manual yet but will have one shortly, so until then, I have a few questions. How difficult is it to take all the guts in and out of one of these lower units? Are there any special tools required? Do the gears need to be adjusted for back lash etc? And lastly, is $75 reasonable for the housing?

$75 is excellant for a housing. as long as it is the right one. i have not done one of the larger lowers, so i can't tell you. but having all the parts will speed up you time at the shop, for repair.
