Issue with my remot throttle control. Need help.

Ok I am sort of useless here but I have a boat that has an old 75hp johnson engine on it. I purchased it from a guy 3 years ago to use. It has served me well but today I pused the throttle all the way down and well it went past where it is suppsed to stop and broke.

I now have no throttle control. I can still shift into neutral and forward but I only have idle. I took the controller box off the side mount and the lever that I use to open up the carbs for starting basicall fell off. IT looks like there is a screw that holds this thing on and that screw broke. Needless to say I am guessign that somehow this caused the thing to fail. (I beleive the lever that opens the carbs for startign is called a warm up lever or somethign like that)

I don' knwo what to do. I will try to take the box apart next weekend but I am guessing I may need a new remote control box. Do they sell these controls with the lever for opening up the carbs for starting in the nutral position????

Also I am nto sure how it works but when I turn the key I am supposed to push it in to help start the engine. I beleive that this somehow opens the choke. So I beleive I need this on the control box as well. The last itme on my control box is a trim adjustment switch.

If I need to get a new control where shoudl I look and do they sell these anymore.

Go to this link: Evinrude Parts Catalog, find your year, size motor and model. Then click on "Remote Control". Zoom in to the diagram and find the parts that broke. You should be able to order just the pieces that broke.

Pretty good advice re getting the parts you need to fix the control that you have. Uf that doesn't work, however, check out the auction sites and classifieds. There are usually plenty of them for sale.

Ok I am goign to go check out that site right now and see if I can figure it out. My problemn is I don't even know what year this motor is. The guy that sold it never told me and I doubt he even knew. It is pretty old and I am guessign it is from the 80s. I knwo it is 75hp and it is 3 cylinder.

Is there a specific place on the motor where I can get a part number or modle number that woudl help me out?


Also I am not familiar with the whole configuration but I would assuem there are multiule remote control boxes that can be attaced to a engine. What I am tryign to say is that I don't see how the engine and remote control are linked cause they could be from different manufactures. I beleive the remote control box is OMC which is the same as Johnson right????


Well let me go surf that site and see what I can find. I will probabyl be back askign quesitons on where to find a new control box for the best price if I can't find what I need to fix the current one.

Do your controls look similar to those (though yours may be white)?

As for model/serial number, as your facing the back of the motor (looking towards the front of the boat), there's a small plate attached to the transom bracket on the left side. It's about 1" by 1 1/2". It will have the model number and serial number. If it's missing, on top of the motor, there will be a small silver disc about the size of a quarter that will have the serial number on it. Look for those and post what you find.

If the warm-up lever broke off at the screw, I don't think that would create the problem you are describing (no throttle). So there may be more going on. All the warm-up lever does is move the throttle cable a little bit without moving the shift cable. It does this by using a small cam on the throttle mechanism. Since you have no throttle at all, it sounds to me that your cable broke or came loose at either end. Get an OEM manual for your motor after you find out what year it is. This manual will have a section on the controller that will show you how to adjust the cables. As Reggie08 suggested, the parts diagram will let you know if something inside is broken.

P.S. When the warm-up lever is in the 'up' position it is supposed to lock the throttle/shift lever from moving so you can't shift while the engine is revving high. Was your controller doing this before it broke?

the only way to tell whats wrong. is to know exactly what motor you have, Model #!!!. remove the cowl, and work the throttle, and see if anything moves. a cable could have come off. cable could have broken. but from what you are saying, start watching ebay. but we still need to know what your motor is, so you get the correct control.

Ok I will take a good look at the motor next weekend and fidn the serial number, The boat is at the shore and I only go down on weekends so I have to wait until next week to get all the information on the board.

I will let you know what I find.

I was crusing at near max speed and decided I wanted to get up to full speed for a short run before I took the boat to the ramp to pull it out. When I pushed the throttle forward and down it went all the way down - meaning it went past flat and down torwards the floor. I coudl tell right away somethign broke. Then I pulled it back into the nutral position and the engen when into nutral. I then moved to forward and it when into a forward idle but I had no throttle control. When I moved the idle lever it fell off cause the scew that hodes it on failed. However I get no movement at the engine when I move the throttle.

It is hard to beleive that both the screw and the cable broke at the same exact time but hey you guys know more than me so I will get the part numbers that I can find and I will try to pull the remote control box apart this weekend so see if I can figure out what is going on inside.

Where again is the part number for theh remote control box???

Ok I found the modle number of the boat but ran into more problems.

Modle number is J75TLCTE

I tried takign the remote control box apart this weekend to find out what broke and well I stripped the crap out of the screws. The darn things would not come out. I got one to move and it broke but the other two woudl not move and the screws are stripped.

At this point it looks like I need to get a new remote control and new throttle and shift cables. Can you guys help me figure out what control box and cables to purchase.

I would like to find the lowest cost option here but I would liek to get new parts so I can trust in them.

Also I pulled the remote tilt switch off the throttle lever so I can use that seperatly and don't need to re-wire it into a new unit but I can if need be. Looks like the engien is a 1983.

I just need somebody to tell me what remote control box and cables to purchase. Boat is 15 foot.

Yes, to start the outboard when it is cold or for the first time of use you must squeeze the primer bulb until hard/firm, raise the warm up lever, which that is what definetly is broken in your pictures, full up, turn the key and at the same time push in while cranking until it statrts realease the key and bump it a couple of times until it runs on its own then you are good to go. Also during these steps make sure your gas tank vent is open up.

You can get the remote control box on Ebay or www.craigslist.com listing for your area. These remote control boxe, that you have there in the picture, I have been told can be used on engines from 1968 to 1996 so you should be able tio find you one at a lower price than brand new. You might be able to just use your existing cables to save money if there not streched or broken and make sure that if you get another remote used that is get the key for it that comes with it. If it were me and the cables were fine just buy the remote only with key if it doesn't already come with the cables. Let me know, Bob

I htink you missed my point in that I can't get the remote control box open and the screws are stripped. Therefore I can not get into the box to remove the cables so they can't be reused.... Unless you know another way to get in without removing the screws...


Also I don't want to go the wrong route and get a used box and cables that are goign to break. I woudl ratehr pay for somehting new that will fit my needs and give me a long service life.

So what parts should I get?
