1985 mercury 75H.P. Do I need to retime the engine and is there anything else I have to do after installing new stator and trigger.

It should start right up but it's a good idea to check the timing after replacing the trigger.

Definitely check the timing. I just changed the trigger and stator in mine and didnt check the timing. It seems that the timing got advanced after I did the change and I didnt check the timing afterwards. The result was a melted piston and I am now changing the powerhead....

I just got back from west marine and the book they have on it makes timing the engine harder than the actual installing of the stator and trigger~!

Linc n Sync do I need a large water tank for that or is that a dry procedure ?
That is why I would like to do it myself,,just not for $$ saving but to learn about my engine.

All the setup and timing is done with the starter motor. Final idle setting is done at the lake.

It's in the book.

Setting the timing itself is pretty easy. The only thing that intimidated me was setting the actual timing pointer.

Greg,,,Yes it looks very intimidating but I think I am going to try doing it myself for the knowledge.
I am going to go see if I can find an original merc manual tomorrow at the merc dealer.

Check to see if your timing pointer is adjustible. Some were but I'm not sure on your year. Maybe someone else can chime in. If it is you need a dial indicator to make sure the marks on the flywheel really indicate where the engine is in relation to it. Mine happened to be off a few degrees which would have affected the final timing.

3 degrees timing on an 85 merc with today's gas is the difference between running right and turning into scrap before you get across the lake.

That is exactly why I am now changing my powerhead due to a melted piston from improper timing.

That is what is intimidating to me,melted pistons,,bigger problems than the original one,,I still want to do it ,so you will be seeing me asking questions as I go along.
You guys have helped and have given me confidence to do this,just want to thank you all,,,,Mike
