Is it possible for the shift rod to be out of adjustment? I bought a used boat and when in neutral the clutch dog is hitting the forward gears. If I move the lever back about 1/2" in it stops. It pops out of gear in rev. when I give it gas. It will hold rev. only when idling. I think the shifter isn't going back far enough back to fully ingage rev. but I don't know if it is possible for the shift rod to be put on incorrectly or is there only one way for it to go on. I have adjusted the cable all the way out and it hasn't fixed it.If anyone can help it would be appricated.

Typically, the shift rod deteriorates due to corrosion and loses its torsional strength, such that it is incapable of moving the gears through their full range of motion. This produces the symptoms you are experiencing. The shift rod must be replaced ... and this repair is well documented elsewhere.

1996 yamaha and it is used in saltwater. I think the lower unit has been off and the water pump replaced. I didn't know if it was possible that the rod wasn't put back exactly where it needed to be and could be off just a hair.
