Well first of all this is a great site. I am new but have been doing lots of reading. I did read about this swap and had one question. I have a blown ford 302 188. So I am planning on going to a junkyard and getting a 302. My question was what engine should I look for so i can reuse the marine intake manifold? I see the thermostat housing is way different than a car. If anyone has done this before or has any helpful information it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Motor swap question

The blocks are the same. You need to get as close to the year that you have.Newer engins might not bolt up The difference will be with the manifold and the internal motor parts. The cam and head gaskets and brass freeze plugs are the main difference.Your new motor will work. The performance might be off,if you have a 1979 get a motor from that era.Jerry

Re: Motor swap question

Welcome to iboats.........:)
It needs to come from a truck (van or pickup)or you will need to replace the cam.......
Anything pre 1980 will work.....
Anything newer & you will have to pay close attention to how it matches up to see if it fits, as Fords are not as simple as GM in that department......
It MUST be a Windsor, not a Cleveland or M......
Also, you could be tempted to put a 351 in, & it will work, but you will need to do some other modifications.....
If it has closed cooling, you can throw it right in, if it is raw water cooled, you will need to change the head gaskets to marine & install brass core plugs.......
Since you are in Colorado, it is most likely raw water cooled........
I'd put the brass core plugs in regardless.......;)

Re: Motor swap question

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it. That is kind of what I read so far totally reassured me. Just out of curiosity though what is the difference between a marine head gasket and an automotive application?

The marine head gasket uses stainless steel. I THINK most automotive gaskets use stainless steel anymore as well... but not sure. I know the marine gasket does.

Many head gaskets are now composite material. Felpro makes an excellent product.

Re: Motor swap question

Do the 351 Winsor if you can find one. Nothing like that longer stroke.
