I was recently out on the water and the tilt kept trying to trim up while in motion. By the time I got the boat to the ramp, the drive was all the way down and would not come up. I ended up having to take the boat out with the drive down. I have dissassebled the shift arm and found two cut wires and repared them. Currently, the trim motor runs when you hit the down button, but nothing happens when you push the trailer or up buttons. I am at a loss. I reconected the shifter wires and still nothing. I think the wires were cut in the process of moving the shifter to get it to work. Probably a coincidence. I do not think it is the limiting switch, because the trailer button doenst work either. Is there a fuse just for the up/trailer buttons? Any suggestions would be great.

What outdrive do you have, and what year?

I can't help with a fix but in case you get in this situation again.

On mine, and I would guess on many other, you can override the sensor by taking the harness plug off the pump motor and using a wire to jump the contacts. I have had to do this when I first bought my boat because the trailer switch was bad.

For all who are interested, (PROBLEM SOLVED). It was the "up" solenoid. The solenoid went bad, due to the short in the wires on the shifter. The new solenoid was $20.00. I removed the entire trim pump assembly from the boat to put the new solenoid on.. Kindof a pain in the @$$, but easy enough for a novice, (just took time). Now I have to figure out how to get the air out of the system, because the outdrive flexes up and down when you push on it.

I think All you need to do is run the drive to full up and down positions a few times to remove any air trapped in the lines.

There is also something I read about bleeding the lines. I think you dissconnect the lines at the trim cylinders and run the pump till the oil flows out steadily.

You know Don will post here shortly but I think the best thing would be to post a new question although this is still part of this topic.

When you repaired the cut wires did you have to take outdrive off boat? We have a 1992 Thompson with Mercruiser 3.0L and appears the wires that were cut have dry rotted all the way to pump. Can we put all new wires on without taking whole outdrive off?

Thanks,

Renee
