Went out tonight to check WOT with just me on the boat..........WOT was ~4800RPM............then it started to stumble and stalled. Has done this twice before and I attributed it to water in the fuel. This time it was hard to start..........almost seemed flooded. Finally got it re-started and it continued tu run rough and stumble........went in.

When I got to the slip I checked the timing.......was maybe at 10*, retarded towards 6-8* and changed the fuel filter/water seperater (spelling?).

Can I still have a water in the fuel problem?

How old is the fuel in the gas tank? It couls be just bad gas. Put some fuel stbilizer in the tank.

when you changed the fuel filter I have read it can take some time for the new filter to fill completly. I dont think this is the case though as I dont think it takes that long to fill the filter as it seems you were out running around.

Maby a clogged jet in the carb perhaps?

Don't know what distributor you've got, but Is there a rev limiter on that engine?

Did you dump the contents of the filter in a clear container and see if there was water in it? That is the only way to know for sure.
If there is a lot of water in the filter, then it's time to clean the tank. (not a big deal to clean really see link below)

If the filter had a lot of water in it, and there is water in the carb, then it won't run thru the carb as easy as the gas. Might have to use the ole "let the engine suck the garbage out of the carb" tick a couple of times.
On muffs (or in the water, doesn't matter) (drive down and steering straight to keep everybody happy) . Now, disconnect the throttle linkage, rev the engine up, when it gets up to 3 to 4K Close the choke plate completely (don't allow the 4bbl to open) and at the same time open the throttle to WOT. THe engine should start dying. Just before it does, open the choke, and let the engine gain rpm again. Do this a couple of times.
Usually sucks any dirt, and water out of the carb.
But you need to do that after you are sure the filter is getting only gas.

another thing you can try is starting with the throttle cable disconnected.

Disconnect the fuel line into the pump.... before or after the fuel filter.... your choice...

Let the engine run and spray some good carb cleaner or power tune down the bowl vent (not down the venturi of it, but locate the actual bowl vent) of the carb... that will help dilute any water in the bowl and pull any crap through. keep reving and spraying until it bucks out. Then hook up a KNOWN GOOD fuel supply and see what happens.

What they both said.
Pouring alcohol down the vent tube works also, as the alcohol mixes with the water.

fuel stabilizer will not fix bad gas. It needs to be put into good gas to keep it from going bad. If it is bad gas the tank needs to be drained and refilled. If there is not too much gas in the tank filling it with good gas and some seafoam usually works for me.

Tried Don's trick tonight...........didn't quite know what to expect but when I performed his procedure...........it definitley was "sucking".....

Did it a few times............first time it was stumbling like when I was out on the water..........after a few time it seemed to clear out..........next have to go out for a ride tomorrow. Hope this did the trick..........

Water in bowl, water will not go through the jets. Unless the old trick Don said.
Hope that was it. (I can't believe Don let out the old geezer trick; it was a secret.)
Pouring Coke down the carb at 3500 rpms will bust loose carbon in the head.
(so will water)
Hope that solves it.

Didn't have the ability to do that at he slip Don...........

Ayuh,...

If you bring a Freezer rated Baggie with you, a Quart size works nicely, Crack the fuel filter Loose, Slip the Baggie under it, Unscrew the filter,+ drop it into the Baggie,...
Seal the Baggie, then invert it....
You'll be able to See what was in the filter,+ Not Spill a Drop....
