Re: grey oil leak

Ayuh,....

Your Outdrive has a Serious Leak,.....

If you can't explain it, I'm betting you can't Fix it either,....
I suggest you find a Marine Tech who knows his way around an OMC,+ contract him to Fix it.....

Re: grey oil leak

The ujoint bellows probably has a hole in it, the water gets in the drive, and turns milky gray. Then sense the drive is overfilled, the heat of operation forces it back out of the drive and into the bellows.
If it's like other "Gray" gear lube I have seen, it's thick and almost impossible to wash off of parts. The drive will have to be dissassembled and cleaned, new bellows, ujoints, gimbal bearing, and probaly the input shaft seal and yoke if rusty and grooved.

Re: grey oil leak

sounds like fluid from your trim pump. Mine was a gray color, however it could be a lot of things. Trim the drive up and down and listen for a bubbling or a "ttisss" If you hear this your hose is prob. broken. Also your trim will stop going up and down soon as you loss enough oil. Try checking the amount of oil in the trim pump and see if the level has dropped.
This is the only fluid i can think of that is gray and has that much fluid to leak.

Use the dipstick to check the oil level in the drive. The tube your seeing is probably the exhaust bellows, it looks like round accordian about 3" diameter. The exhaust emitts through this tube, could it be just his engine is burning a little oil and it's accumilating in the exhaust bellows?

If it was trim fluid it wouldn't be leaking from the bellows. Run it off muffs in your yard if you can to try try & pinpoint the leak. But, I think Don S. is right on the money with his advice. If there's water in the u-joint bellows your looking at some steep repair bills. Who knows how long it was run that way before you bought it. Sorry.
