Hey,

I recently with a friend pulled out a cruisers seafarer (cira 1960 i think) that had been sitting in a barn for 30+ years. the boat is in great condition and motor runs, however it needs an external paint job, and we wanted to go to a natural varnish look' from a whit paint job... i was wondering how y'all would do this and what varnish (or whatever) you would use.

also, does anyone have any information on this boat? also, is there any serial number on this boat or anything?

Re: Cruisers Seafarer

There should be a data plate somewhere, but I would not know the exact spot.

Barn finds are cool!

I do not know the boat, but it sounds like a wooden that is painted? If so, I would think stripping the paint to the bare wood by sanding would be a lot of work. If you can find a decent paint stripper that will not soak into the wood, use that. I know there are a few that are waterbased that can be used, but you must ensure you get it out of all the nooks and crannies, because it will come back and ruin the varnish.

Once done, you will learn what it means to "soak" your boat so it doesn't leak. :D

you can either have to soak it every year, or you can glass below the water line.

Re: Cruisers Seafarer

wooden boats....especially longer ones...30 + feet....dry out and the wood shrinks.....they need to be kept wet...as the wood swells and the joints seal better......

often they will have to pull a woodie out. and "cork" the boat....
adding cork between the hull planks to stop water intrusion.....
very common with antique motor yachts

i dont know of any varnish that will stand up to under water usage...

ok, well how do people run around with a varnish looking boat if it cannot be below the water line? do they glass over it or what? just curious, as i've seen the look before.

Re: Cruisers Seafarer

they paint them every couple of years, or glass them. there is more maintenance, for a wood boat, than a fiberglass. the reason we have so many glass boats.
