New Primer Bulb Collapses

I replaced an old ethanol-incompatible fuel line and primer bulb on my '94 Mercury 225 with a new Universal Marine assembly I picked up at NAPA. The bulb collapses, even at idle. Although the engine doesn't die, I haven't taken it on the water yet to find out the hard way whether it will under throttle.

Should I have gone with a genuine Mercury OEM assembly? The boat has a built in 60-gallon tank with a check valve at the pickup tube. Do I even need a primer bulb since the fuel line should theoretically stay primed with the check valve at the tank?

You need a 3/8" bulb for your engine, Mercury is probably better but I know others that use sierra bulbs with no trouble. I believe you have a fuel tank screen plugged or a anti siphon valve sticking and thats your problem.

Also make sure the arrow on the bulb is pointed toward the engine..

Use the Mercury set. I've seen V6's burn down from running lean with aftermarket parts in that area.

I agree with the other advice also.

hope it helps

Thanks for the feedback. So, what do you think of simply foregoing the primer bulb going with a direct line to the motor? The anti-siphon valve at the tank pickup tube should keep it primed; right?

the bulb collasping shows you have a problem...need do check the info. as stated on pickup tube...taking away the bulb won't fix the problem....no doubt when you go the water and open the trottle it wont go full bore.....bulb is needed for start up most people at the of a day disconnect fuel supply and let engine run till it dies

You "DO NEED" the primer bulb. Theory on works on paper. Get an OEM bulb, that will probably solve your problem. It is not worth dectroying you engine over something so trival.
Advise is only good if taken and everybody here is saying the same thing.

OK, got the message :). I'll check the fuel system again and get a Merc bulb. I'm an analyst by profession and nature. So I tend to ask the "what if" question a lot. Thanks for the guidance.
