Wrote a post last week about a possible VRO problen on my 88 110HP Johnson. Thougt I eliminated an air issue and was back in business.

Was running the SEABREEZE carbon cleanout procedure when, once again the oil just started pumping in again and started loading up the cylinders. Shut down the procedure and held my head in shame.

I installed a new clear fuel filter before I ran the cleaning procedure and saw something interesting once I stopped the engine. After a couple of minutes, the fuel color in the filter turned fromn clear to heavy oil colored.

Here are some questions for the experts out there:
1. Can I presume that the oil being fed back into the gas line is a faulty seal or check valve in the VRO?
2. Can I fix this condition by simply buying and installing a rebuild kit?
3. Is this a normal condition of VRO operation?
4. Where is the cheapest place to buy either a rebuild kit or new VRO?
5. I have a 4 wire VRO. What is the part number for this part? Rebuild kit number?
6. I've also read that all the hoses (preformed) should be replaced and all connections should be replaced. Do you agree? Where to buy on the web?

Thanks to all for taking the time to reply.

Re: Psycho VRO

88 you need either to go to the new oms pump $350.00. or disable the oils side or vro, and go premixed fuel.

You will need VRO pump PN#5004558. the hoses and connectors should not have to be replaced just because the pump failed. As posted earlier you can not rebuild the oil side and the pump will need to be replaced. Or as tas said you can unhook the oil side and go to premixing the fuel. If you unhook and premix you will also need to unhook the VRO warning system so the warning horn does not drive you crazy.

Part number 5004558 superseded to part number 5007420 some time ago. Better to get the newer parts - some have been on the shelf awhile.

Re: Psycho VRO

If I had to put $350 or more into it I would be converting to pre-mix

Well, these are the alternatives as far as I can see; run it as a premix pump or replace it.

I have the 1986 140 hp vro system, I also know the owner of the marina I go to, this spring I had doubts that my vro system was working. because I was keeping a carefull eye on the oil took a dowel rod measured the depth of the oil in the tank, itwas going down but in my eyes not enough. installed a new alarm system, pre mixed my oil 50-1 now keep in mind the mechanic said it was working:eek: well if it is why is the alarm going on. saw the owner in a restaurant last night, he said hows it running, said I dont trust your mech, oh why his eyes got big as a saucer, and they test drove it ?????? pre mix your oil

The early VRO systems mix between 50 to 1 and 150 to 1 depending on rpm and load I believe. If that is the case then it will use less than pre-mix if you are not running WOT or trolling a lot.
Just my 2 cents though, I am prepared to be educated by someone with more wisdom on this.
My VRO on my 1985 is still working with no issue to date. Remember with one gallon of oil in the tank it should last for 50 plus gallons of gas.

Re: Psycho VRO

To All Out There With Related Vro Problems. I Had To Pump The Fuel Bulb To Make It Back In To The Landing The Other Day. After Going Thru New Hose Clamps,bulb,hose...ectand Changing The Fuel Diaphram On The Vro,a Mechanic Asked Me If The Sleeve Had Come Loose In The Housing On The Fuel Side Where The Oil Piston Plunges Back And Forth Into.sure Enough The Sleeve Dislodged And Was Working To Hold The Piston From Stoking, thus Preventing The Fuel Diaphram From Going Back And Fourth.this Is A Old Pump And He Said They Didnt Fix Them. But If You Remove The Sleeve From The Piston And Have It Knurled By A Machine Shop, just Press It Back In The Sleeve./just A Tip!

Why guess, use a dowel, rely on your "eyes", etc? Just mark the level on your oil tank with a piece of tape, and fill your fuel tank full. Run the engine a couple of hours, measure how much gas you've used by how much it takes to re-fill the tank and how much oil it takes to fill back up to the line you marked.

Then divide the number of ounces of gasoline were burned (gallons X 128) by the number of ounces of oil burned. Even with older VRO1 or VRO2 or OMS, it should be around 50 to 60, assuming the running has been cruising speed. Every VRO or OMS averages in that range for normal cruising (but not for constant idling or trolling).

There should be no guess work involved if all you're trying to do is see how much oil is being burned.
