Hello all!
I just got a 1976 Glastron T-187 with a Mercruiser 165 HP inline 6. This thing is rough, but I think it can be saved. Right now, I just want to get it running enough to take it out a couple of time to see if I like it enough to put a bit of money into it. Its pretty solid (except for a small soft spot in the floor), but there's to be something fishy going on with the engine. It has a carb from a 3.0l engine (tag 1389-9562) which is quite rigged onto the manifold (due to holes not lining up?). It's obvious that the carb; right one or not needs to be rebuilt. Here are my questions:
1) Since I have the wrong carb for my engine, can I use the one I have or should I buy the right one? Aside from the bolts and slight offset, everything else seems to connect OK. (I have access to a machine shop, so making a nice adapter plate is no problem)
2) If I rebuild the current carb, will it have enough cfm (the 165 is a 4.1l/250ci right?) and where can I find a kit?
3) If I need to buy the right carb, where can I find a suitable reman (part numbers anyone?)?
4) If I do need to get a new carb, should I go with the OEM or is there something else I can use?
Please keep in mind, this boat needs a lot. I'm not looking for the ideal solution, just the budget one. I'd like to play with it this summer without putting much into it and if I like it, do a nice overhaul this winter. On my list of things to replace is the manifold as it is getting pretty thin, thermostat housing, exhaust elbow, bellows and what ever else looks rough. Engine seems solid compression is within 15% across the board so I might get a fews years out of it with some pretty basic maintenance. I've been working on cars for a long time, but this is my first time working on a boat. All help appreciated!!!
