I want to fish this lake . I should be able to make the trip mid to late August. Any body here have any experience there? Is it worth the trip (450 miles) during the dog days of summer?

Depends on what you want to fish for. We have members at crappie.com that fish it most of the year. In fact we have a crappie "bash" scheduled for this sat.a

Re: Smith Mountain lake.

I want to go for bass. Not sure if a 450 mile trip is worth it to me for crappies. Also was wondering if the striper's there bust bait fish on the surface at night? I am a big fan of fishing deep, so if the summer pattern puts the bass deep I should have no problems. I know some lakes can be flat out dead in the summer. Anything else you can tell me about summer fishing in the lake? Also I will have my wife along. any good places around for some nightlife fun, good food and things to do?

Thanks

I did a stripper trip to SML a few years back. Despite torrential rain for two of the three days, we caught quite a few fish (fished with a guide). It's a great lake, we had a great time, I'd go again in a second. As for the Bass fishing, we picked up a few while trolling for the strippers, so their defiantly there.

Lived there for almost seven years - been there, done that. It is indeed a beautiful place but very hectic on the summer weekends, and only getting worse I'm afraid. Here's a little guide to browse through, hope it helps some.
As far as things to do at night - well, there's been too many changes for me to give you any specifics but the Halesford Bridge area was always a place to go. Couple of restaurants, sandwich shop, etc.

Thanks for the info. I figured the weekend are nuts, I'll try to make it mid week.

You better make it mid week, and preferably after school begins. We spent two weeks there last year and had a ball. Fished a few times and caught some stripers and a few bass on the inlets. This lake has gotten crazy busy so be prepared to fight the traffic. Have fun.

Good stuff . I am going to rethink going to this lake. If I want to fight crowds I can do that right here. Sounds like the place is getting over developed like so many lakes are these days.
