I have a 2005 Johnson 40 horse purchased new in 2005. Every time I talk to the dealer he wants to know when I'm bringing it in to have the oil injection system disconected. Does anyone know why this would be necessary or what it entails? Just for the record this engine replaced an older Johnson that the oil tank ran dry on. My thoughts are since the boat is used by my children and their friends maybe it would be best to run premix as cheap insurance against a reoccurance. I'm also curious if it's as simple as plugging the oil lines and disconnecting the oil alarm. That is to say can I do it myself?

I agree with your suggestion, the only problem is there is no other dealer. This one is 45 miles from me and he is the closest. I've been unhappy since day one concerning several issues. The biggest issue is the dealer not installing the flow alarm. I'm not sure what the flow should be but the tank doesn't seem to go down much.

are you using a 6 gallon gas tank, and the oil tank. if so fill the 6gallon tank, mark or oil tank where it is now. then run the boat on the 6 gal tank. now calculate how much oil was used. it should equal out to 50:1 ratio. 2005 has the new OMS pump, rather than the vro pump your old motor had.

Thanks for the suggestion! The boat hasn't been in the water yet this season. It's kept on a trailer and only used when my children and grandchildren come to visit. The other engine quit because the alarm was disconnected and none of them knew to check the oil tank. My fault really I didn't keep a close enough eye on things.

There is no good reason to disable the oil injection system. Your dealer has his head where the sun dosen't shine. Just keep an eye on the oil tank level as stated above, it uses less than you might expect. Also make sure the alarms are working, an OEM Service Manual is well worth the price.
