Re: Johnson Super Sea Horse 40

wyelkdog,

Welcome to Iboats.

You Have a 1960 Johnson 40 HP there. Use champion plugs J4C gapped at .030". It is a 2 Stroke motor run it on 24:1 fuel to oil ratio. Prior to test running the motor check for spark and compression, change the oil in the lower unit, check the oil for water or metal shavings and give the motor a once over checking all bolts and screws, if she has sat for a while you never know if someone may have tried to fix something and gave up prior to completion.

Test run the motor in a garbage can full of water, making sure that the leg is submerged at least half way but do not put it in gear stay in neutral. Make sure you have water coming out the exhaust, if not shut the engine down immediately and change the water impeller, or you may damage the motor.

you should be looking for around 100 psi but no problems as low as 75 psi most important is that you are within 10% on all cylinders.
