I have an 88 Johnson that starts and runs for about 5-10 mins. Then when it is put into nuetral it dies out. Sometimes, I can get it into nuetral or in gear and then it dies. The little red flow valve thingee (sorry don"t know what to call it.) was moved around. Could it be that the valve needs to be in the exact position? Or do I need to have the carberator cleaned or replaced? Or could it be a fuel pump issue? As you can probably tell don't know to much about engines but trying to learn. Please help! Thanks for your time.

If you mean the red pointer on the primer solenoid, it should always be aligned parallel to the cylinder of the solenoid. The pointer is only used in emergency situations to manually add fuel for a cold start when rope starting with a dead battery.

Hi I'm new at this so I don't know how to post a new topic. My 1988 evinrude starts fine and idles fine but when I take it out and run it in gear for 5 or ten minutes it dies. It'll start back up then die again after going 100 ft or so. I took it back to the dock and started up and ran it in idle for 15 minutes more. No problem. I even opened up the gas cap on the tank to make sure it was'nt a vent problem. Any Ideas?
