88 johnson and bad motor

I have a 1992 16' Skeeter with 88 johnson that I purchased on a whim. I took it to the local marina and they said the motor is not worth fixing. The compression is bad in all cylinders. Should I get a second opinion and if not what motor would be recommended for this boat. The boat itself and the trailer are in very good shape. What is the smallest motor I could get away with on this boat? Thanks so much for the help. My 3 young boys are ready to go fishin and I would like to get the boat in the water.

What size motor is it? Not worth fixing compared to what? Does it run? Describe bad compression.

First,do you recall the comp.readings?what caused you to bring the boat to the mechanic.?Most mechanis are good honest guys.Is this guy?Do you know for sure your eng .is bad.If so.Sorry to hear it.Your boat would run good with a 3 cyl.60-70 hp.They are basically the same engine.I wouldnt go smaller ,you are looking to fish with 4 people, thats kinda max.You say the boat and trailer etc.is in great cond.thats why I opened with my curiosity.Heres a post I answered yesterday.Hope it helps.Good luck 2 u and the boys.http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=256009

88hp and early 90's for age. I bought the boat from a guy being deployed to middle east that needed the money. I boought it without putting in the water and testing motor. It would turn over, but not start. The mechanic had no reason to tell me anything but the truth. He just charged me one hr labor to check it out. No obligations after that. I believe he said that the compression ratings were all under 50psi. Thanks for your help.

you need to do some trouble shooting your self. all of it pretty easy. get or borrow a screw in compression gauge, remove all the spark plugs, insert guage, into each spark plug hole individually, with the key turn the motor over 5 or 6 rotations. record the # off each cylinder. now take a spark tester available at auto parts store. with the plug back in, connect the tester to the plug wire, and to a good ground. have some one turn the motor over. watch the tester for bright spark. now post the results of this. the 88hp is a nearly bullet proof motor. with the worst being run hot, or with out oil.

I would invest in a compression guage. You can get one at your local autoparts pretty cheap. You want one that screws into the plug hole. Not one you hold over.As you may see Dhadley,a well respected mech.is also curious. Not to say it cant happen, but all 4 cylinders with bad compression at same time isnt common.Even more uncommon would be consistent readings that are low,Say 45 48 50 52.More acceptable would be 110 112 115 117.Thats for example.there is possibility that comp.guage is not reading right. If you had a blown cyl.it would read more like 0 to perhaps 20 and 99.999 percent of time 1 0r 2 crlinders might go bad at once.I just dont want to see a new guy spend unessary money. The common problems are dirty carbs if a boat sat too long.FYI,what you WANT to do when you buy an eng.is comp.as a number 1,spark yes if you can ,but if the eng runs spark likely not a prob. And see it pees water.I tell you this because after you buy your comp guage(about $25)you can use it anytime you go to buy another eng.Well spent money.Get back to us with comp readings.Usually,if a cylinder goes bad,you will feel binding while turning flywheel by hand with plugs out.Rings crack and can score the cylinder. There are other reasons.Even with bad comp,as long as it had gas ,spark and some comp.It should of tried to strt.

I believe the boat sat for several years before I got it. I appreciate all of the input. I will pick up a gauge and see what I can find out. What is the easiest way to drain the old gas in a boat like this? I would assume the gas should not be used if it has sat for several years. Thanks again!

If you have portable cans, remove the hose that goes to the eng.from the squeeze ball and add a piece of hose long enough to allow the fuel to flow down to the cans, squeeze the ball to get the flow going.Dont know what you drive, but you might be able to add a few gallons at a time to burn it up.
