Chrysler 45 hp Model 457HH Questions

In 2003 I bought a really nice 1976 Glaspar Avalon with a color-matched, Chrysler 45 hp (standard ignition) two-cylinder motor from an estate sale. I ran the motor once that year and then stored it covered for five years outside at several locations. I did not receive an owners manual or repair manual with the motor when I bought it used in 2003.

We cleaned up the boat and motor today and I am having trouble getting the motor restarted with a new battery and fresh fuel in a new gas tank -- turns over fine, but the motor won't start. I bought a used, 1985 edition Clymers Chrysler outboard repair manual today at a local booksore that helps me understand the motor a little better. However, the Clymer's manual lacks any good annotated motor layout drawing illustrations for a 45 hp model like mine. What I would like to know is:

1. The two coils on the side of the motor are not numbered. Which coil is the cylinder #1 coil - the top coil?
2. When the motor is timed, is the top cylinder #1? I assume the top cylinder is #1 because Clymers says to time the motor with a piston depth gage in the top spark plug hole.
3. I have the Chrysler motor control unit with a dash-mounted starter switch. Where is the motor kill switch located on a typical mid-1970's installation?
4. The side of the motor control lever has a silver knob that pulls out for cold starting that I assume activates a choke selenoid for the single carb, or does that pull knob perform another function?

Does anyone out there know the answers to these basic questions, or have an owner's manual that describes these parts and functions?

Don't mess with timing until you do a spark test.Pull a plug and hold it against the head turn the motor over.No kill switch with that old a motor. The top coil is #1
The silver knob is for fast idle only The choke is in the key switch.Push it in as you turn it.You should hear a click at the motor and see the solenoid moving the linkage. Jerry

Re: Chrysler 45 hp Model 457HH Questions

Thanks for the quick response. I did pull the top plug on Wednesday, but I did not see a spark from it when I pressed it against the head out at the lake in bright sunlight (we tried to start it about ten times.) I don't have a "Sparky" board and forgot my Starter Fluid can.

The fuel bulb stayed firm. The ND w16FS-u plugs that were in it were black on the tips, so I changed them out to NGKs yesterday evening (since I can't find Denso plugs around here.) The NGK book called for BR6HS resistor plugs, but I could only find B6HS and B5HS (the ND w16FS-u equivalent) spark plugs at West Marine. The carb may also be varnished, since it sat so long without running. I should have fogged the carb down with Marvel Mystery oil before putting it away...bad boat "parent".

Fuel: I seem to be getting adequate fuel to the cylinders and the fuel filter is clean. I tried a little starting fluid in the carb throat. The choke solenoid engages but will not stay engaged when the starter key is depressed for starting.

Bummer -- upon closer inspection this morning, I found that the #1 coil has a small crack around the molded casing; the crack goes all the way around the aft end of it. Must be why #1 has no spark, huh? Anyone out there know what coil replacement part number(s) will fit my 1976 model 457HH 45 hp Chrysler? Should I replace both coils?

Plugs for that should be L18V if it is a CD model and if not L4J which dont exist anymore and the best cross is L82C. The coil is no longer availible. Part number F12057. Sorry.

Re: Chrysler 45 hp Model 457HH Questions

Well, yesterday I found a brand new coil that I can buy if I need it. However, my cracked-case coil checks out fine on a coil test machine at the local Marine parts dealer's shop (even with multiple cracks in the black casing.) The coil has strong output and shows no arcing or leaks around the casing cracks (I will cover the cracks using West Systems epoxy and the white silica powder filler.)

I borrowed a "Sparky" board from a good friend and used it yesterday morning: result - there is no pulse coming from either coil. My electrical problem is "upstream" from the spark plugs and coils:confused:.

What test is next on this 1976 motor -- maybe the rectifier or the points? Do I need a special tool to remove the fywheel to look at the points and condensers (I assume they are under the flywheel)? Can I find my electrical problem by connecting a Mercury or Force test box to the terminals on the powerhead-mounted wiring terminal board on the port side of the motor? The wiring color code descriptions for the terminals on the block are still there and easy to read.

OK - I am back on the task of repairing this beast. Is there any advice out there on checking and replacing the points? I assume that I wil need a steering wheel or engine pulley puller to extract the starter flywheel from the crankshaft in order to get to the ignition system points. I was told the points gap should be .020-.025. I know from my experience on other outboard motors that ignition point sets for other types of 2-cycle motors (such as motorcycles or other brands of outboards) will work in replacement of the stock points (and sometimes have stronger springs & last longer). Does anyone have replacement points part numbers that will work on my 45 hp Chrysler motor; also, how about condensor part numbers?

Spacky, welcome to iboats. Please start a new thread so you can get the help you need and AOF can get his help.

AOF, check your neutral interlock switch. It is about 1/2 inch by 2 inches, dark brown in color and has a white/yellowish button on bottm. When engine is in neutral this tab is pushed in and allows elec to go thru so engine will start. If not pushed in all the way, you get no spark. This ensures the engine is started in neutral only.

On my 55 the remote has a silver button also. This is to activate the gears. Have to check, but in or out it makes it so when you give fuel or push handle forward it will go into forward gear. The opposite makes sure it stays in nuetral.

Your choke is in the igniton. Push key in as you turn to activate choke.

AOF get yourself a manual. You can find one at the Chrysler Crew. Thats where I got mine. Mr. David "Hurrikain" Kain will help you. I got my service, parts and elctrical manuel from him. Great prices also on manuals.

Started up a $25 458BA 45 HP Chrysler today.-----With an 11 year old helper mechanic.---Cleaned a plugged carburetor.---Fixed water pump / cooling issue.----Runs like a charm with 120 PSI on each.----Some wiring issues to sort out still.----No money spent on the repairs.
