Cant get any water flow after rebuilding the pump twice, removing the thermostats, and checking for blockages
also, the impeller replacement kit came with a small O-ring about an inch in diameter and i cant figure where it goes
the only thing i can figure is its not sealed going from the pump housing to the pick up tube in the exhaust housing

any ideas

thanks in advance

How long have you let it run on the muffs ?

It takes about 45 seconds for mine to fill up the powerhead and start flowing out the pee hole.

That O ring should go right on top of the shaft...I think.

Welcome to iboats.

Are you testing this on the water or muffs? If on muffs, it should pee from the force feeding action of your garden hose regardless, even without the impeller installed. If it is not, you have a blockage somewhere, or the key was left out. That o ring does sound like the one for the top of the driveshaft from your description, it will sit right beneath the splines.

Are you certain that the rubber grommet on top of the impeller housing is seated correctly, and not blocking the water line, I have seen that happen many times. Check the water intake area for debris. Check that the tell tale line is clear, and the nipple is not blocked. Little critters love to build nests in here, restricting water flow to the indicator. When the lu was down, were you able to flush compressed air or the garden hose up the water line to the t stat housing, and back flush it down to ensure no blockage?

Re: 1989 225 v6 vro water question

thanks for the quick responses
i am using muffs and have waited about 20-30 seconds w/ no water but the muffs arent super tight (water flows out around them)

i shot water from the pick up in the exhaust housing through the engine and there were no blockages, there are also no blockages w/in the lower unit.

So the o-ring goes just below the splines on the very top of the drive shaft?

i wasnt aware of a grommet where the water flows out if the pump housing, how it is now the pick up tube just feeds right in the pump housing with no apparent seals? sorry if this doesnt make sense, im new at this

im gona fill a trash can up w/ water and try to run it w/o muffs but i didnt want to let it run 45 seconds so it wouldnt overheat, but ill leave it running longer this time

i had a mechanic friend tell me to add a bit of 5/8 water hose to the copper pick up in the exhaust housing that goes into the pump housing b/c the end looks a little disfigured. so ill probly try that as well.

thanks guys

o yea, the engine didnt even run at all until i removed the thermostats and now it idles pretty good. i thought that was interesting too.

You should have a grommet and an o ring in the water pump housing kit. The grommet guides the water line into the impeller housing, as well as seals it from water escaping. Go to www.shop.evinrude.com, and follow the prompts to your model to view the exploded gearcase diagram. I would also put the t stats back in, as they are there for a reason.

So you are saying that water will exit the tell tale when running the garden hose up the water line, but not when the outboard is running on muffs? If so, there is a restriction in the water intake area or the grommet is blocking the water flow into the water line.
