From what you describe, I think it is a carburator issue. All the plugs should look the same. I would pull the carbs off and clean them.

If you are going to hook up an external tank, throw in some seafoam, that stuff works great, and might clean thinks up.

Other than that, I would check for spark output, these engines run like crap if the ignition system is not putting out full spark.

Is this the 235 that was for sale on Craigslist in the treasure coast area ?

Best advice would be to invest in a FACTORY OEM SERVICE MANUAL.

Check www.ebay.com, or www.outboardbooks.com, or right here on iboats. It will pay for itself a million times over, and is needed if you are going to do a linc n sync.

Check out the FAQ here on iboats for Joe Reeves WOT Timing Procedure

The 1 1/4 carbs are not the right ones. These carbs are restricting air and fuel flow to the engine. Those size carbs are more typical of a 150. Should be the 1 3/8". It will absolutely affect the way the engine runs. There were two types of 235's in the 1985 model year. The basic 235 and the 2.6. They use different jetting/carbs. Post the model number.

You told on yourself (which was good) you did not remove the jets to clean them. Youor diagnosis of lack of fuel is correct, proven by your spraying fuel into the bottom carb and it took off.

Carb size can make a difference in peak power, however proper fuel flow is critical with ALL carbs. Clean the jets. You may be surprised at how well it runs. A smaller carb maintains higher air velocity at lower speeds, making an engine more responsive and increases fuel economy.

Clean the carbs and try it before you condemn them and rush out to buy another set, the performance difference is not that much.

Hard to tell what year you have from the serial number. Pls post the model number. The two temp senders on the engine heads do not send a variable signal for gauge operation. They are a simple on-off switch, wired in series and will close to ground at 212 degrees and open at around 175. The tell the hot horn when to sound. They are not designed to run a temp gauge. If the gauge does peg, that would indicate to me that the engine is overheating (212 degrees) at that point. I would reconnect them both to the original harness and make sure your horn is working. If it is overheating, that could be part of your operating problem.

The up and down rpms may be an indication that the carbs are running out of fuel. When running full speed, try pumping the fuel hose primer ball. It will force fuel around the pumps into the carbs. If it stays running at full throttle while pumping, you may have a weak fuel pump.

You might also be losing or leaking spark from a cyl.be sure the wires are good and all connections without rust or corrosion. Those seadrives were notorious for getting water into the cowl area (I had 3 of em)causing connections to rust, take them apart and look real good,if your coil grounds are bad clean them

I don't know if you have the parts manual for your motor, but you can print it from the Crowley Marine Site if it helps. I have not been able to find the Sea Drive parts lists otherwise in the original format: http://www.crowleymarine.com/omc_sea_drive_parts.cfm
