Hi all,
Replaced the impellor on my 1989 30hp rude got the parts from the states as half the price of the uk ??, now have no gear selection or neutral, if i turn the prop it will turn the main shaft(removed from engine and on bench beacause of problem) it seems that the rocker pin on the gear casing was removed by mistake along with the filler and drain plugs, can any one offer advice on how to get gear selection again or is it a strip down excersize and rebuild.

Need to get the motor up and running again for the ver short summer season we have in the UK.

Your help and advice is much needed

Remove the selector pin, and get yourself an awl or a small screwdriver and attempt to line up the holes. Shift, shake, rotate - whatever. You can sometimes get lucky.

If not, strip it down and reassemble.

Re: loss of gear selection ???????

The "rocker pin" is the pivot pin for the clutch dog cradle and shouldn't have been removed. Has a phillips head, right? Lay the LU on it's side and move the cradle with an awl or pick until the hole in it lines up with the case hole and replace. The only LU screws to remove are the vent and fill screws for draining filling the LU with gear oil. This is a tedious procedure, so have a pint or two around while you work!

Re: loss of gear selection ???????

Guys thanks for the speedy response i have already tried this on its side and can easily locate the "pivot pin" with a small screwdriver when the holes are aligned i can clearly see the inside of the gear casing into what iam guessing the end of the pivot pin locates, however when this in place i have even less movement on the gear selector rod, i have checked that the rod is fully screwed down and done everthing that i can think of.

Many thanks

The shift shaft should not be screwed all the way down. It need to be a specific length. Consult a shop manual for the right "L" (I don't have the shop manual for your motor).

Re: loss of gear selection ???????

:):):):):):) Hip hip hooray,

Fixed the problem.............. force pumped a very light oil into the gear casing gave it a good 20 mins upside down / on its side turned it over on its other side, fitted back to engine re-connected and whala forward reverse and neutral.

Thanks for the info and now maybe i can help someone.
