Johnson 90 1983 J90TLCTE remote control adjustment.

Are there any "known" procedures and frequently replaced parts to enhance throttle smoothnes for this motor. There is a spring loaded screw on the housing. I am not sure what this does or is intended to do.
Also there is no cotter pin holding one of the cables in place. Is this normal?
The throttle won't move completley forward without much pressure.
I am thinking the cables may need adjustment.
I have the control box open and am replacing what is obviouse to me as worn.
Any knoledge or suggestions would be appreciated.

the cables get stiff as the can not be lubricated. how old are the cables. also sharp bends in the cable cause them to bind.

Thank for the reply!

There are no sharp bends but they were installed with the new rebuild in 1983.

Boat was garaged until 1995 and covered well since. I did zip tie the bundle of cables running the leangth of the boat as part of a refurb of the boat.

The remote was removed from it's mounting location as it was replaced and recovered as the interior refurb I did last summer. Didn't have a chance to test boat last summer at all. It rained every day I was off.

Before that took place the throttle was functioning as it allways had.

I have ordered 3 parts for it and will replace these when they arrive. I just hope this does the trick. These parts are the main moving parts of the throttle control inside the housing. I just didn' know if the cables at the motor might be a source of problems. I will regrease everything inside remote box as well.

If I need to replace, any suggestions for a fair price?

The "spring loaded screw" on the aft side of the remote control box is the throttle friction screw. Turn it counterclockwise to loosen the throttle cable. There should only be enough friction to keep the arm from creeping up or down when you release the control arm.
