Have just finished my snook/tarpon backcountry "sneak boat".....12' Mirro Craft aluminum with a mid 90's, low hours, Merc 25. I tried to keep the weight down , but I figure the hull weight (less engine) with batteries, trolling motor and fuel to be around 275lbs. With the stock aluminum prop....10 3/8 X 13.... the boat planes quickly and runs around 28-30 mph (estimated, as no GPS yet). However I am only pulling 4000 rpm @ WOT. I'll need a spare prop anyway, so the question is should I drop down to an 11 pitch? If not, what prop change (if any) should be made? Thanks guys.

Re: Merc 25 propping question

Your motor should be close to 6,000 rpm.If your correct; your speed is pretty close .Something is up; poor setup or bad tach.I think you have a tach problem.
You can check your setup. Starting with the antivent plate even with the bottom of the boat raise the motor to a point just before venting becomes a problem.Be sure clamps have a good grip and it pumps water.
