Milky oil stern drive Gen II NEED HELP

Okay. My nightmare began when I purchased a boat from a buddy. The bellows were shot and needed replacing. I pulled the stern drive to replace the bellows and found an even bigger mess. The seals were shot and gear lube was all inside the drive shaft bellow. I tore it apart and found the culprit so I ordered a complete seal kit for the entire drive and went to work. After replacing all the seals per the manual, I reassembled the unit, waited a few days, and hooked it to the garden hose. I ran the engine for about 20 min and drained the outer drive. The oil was milky again. I've read through the manual more than a dozen times and can't find where I'm missing anything. I have no ideas at this point; however, I plan to pull the unit this weekend to investigate. Now I did notice upon disassembly that one of the water pump bolt (nearest the oil passage) had been sheared and jerry rigged. It looks like someone did a serious number on it. I inspected the oil passage and it did not appear to be disrupted or damaged. Does anyone have any insight on what I might be missing? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Best to do a pressure / vacum test on the unit after you split it in half (less guessing) plug the oil passage and test each half, you will find the leak by doing the test.

Re: Milky oil stern drive Gen II NEED HELP

I was a little hesitant to label those two as the culprits only because I didn't dunk it (just had it hooked to the garden hose in the driveway) when I discovered the the milky lube this time around. I thought those two prevented water from seaping past the prop when it's in the water. I have a new set of seals for the carrier, they are actually the only original remaining seals left from when I purchased it. Does anyone else have any ideas? It's starting to get a bit frustrating.

Pulled it apart and and put some air pressure to it; still can't find the leak. Any suggestions?

Re: Milky oil stern drive Gen II NEED HELP

Finally acheived success!!! After putting my outer drive under pressure, I realized that there were no hidden leaks that showed themselves as obvious issues. After a detailed inspection, I found that the rubber o-ring that seals the oil passage for the upper and lower unit appeared to not be sealing correctly. More importantly I found that the larger o-ring on the top cover appeared to be the biggest culprit. My service manual shows a plug for the top of the area of the water passage under the top cover. Mine doesn't have one. The manual tells you to use perfect seal; however, it didn't cut the mustard. It was obvious that water was penetrating into the top of my unit and working its way throughout. I used a little permatex to seal the top cover and refilled the unit. I took it out on the 4th and ran the hell out of it. After a whole day on the water, I took her home and flushed the unit. I checked the lube and it was as clean as when it came out of the bottle. Problem solved. Many thanks to all members of this site. I can't tell you how many nights I sat reading different blogs in order diagnose my problem.
