1957 Fleetwin leaks gear oil from top screw

I've got a 1957 7.5 HP Evinrude Fleetwin (model number 7522). I changed the gear oil for the first time a few weeks ago and ever since then I've noticed gear oil leaking from the top screw. The screw is tight.

Is this a problem?

Or is that just a normal way for the motor to protect itself from being overfilled with gear oil?

When I filled it with oil, I took out both screws and let all the oil drain out. (I did not really pay attention to how much oil came out of it) Then I pumped oil in from the bottom screw hole until it flowed out the top hole, then I replaced both screws. I used 90 weight hypoid oil.

Any advice?

Did you put new seals under the fill/vent screws?

There were originally fiber washers under the fill and drain screws. New ones are nylon. In either case, they should be present and in good shape...

They may work, but I think they would crush and extrude out. there is no captive gland to hold them in. Stay with the flat washers. Rick

There were no seals under the fill or vent screws. Where can I get one of these nylon washers?

Any Johnson/Evinrude dealer will carry those. Make sure to check carefully in the vent and drain holes themselvs for the gaskets. Sometimes they stay in there as opposed to coming out on the plugs. Mine do. you'll have to carefully dig them out with a pick or smething if they are.

Ok, I'll try that when I get home today.
