I have a 1996 evinrude outboard motor and when i start up i get a loud alarm sound from the dash. this is a continues sound. I am not sure if it is low pressure or a fuel restriction alarm. I have replaced a few fuel lines because they are starting to crack and i am waiting on a new fuel filter. The fuel filter seal was damaged causing a small leak, and there was some small flakes of stuff in the filter.

when the engine starts i get a ton of blue smoke. Not sure what this could be. if anyone has any ideas let me know.

thanks

Re: Alarm sound

Continuous = High Engine temp.

Blue smoke could be excessive oil, very rich mixture (as in primer left on at the manual red lever switch, etc.)

Re: Alarm sound

Not sure if it is overheating. i get the alarm as soon as i start the motor.

the Manuel red lever switch. I think i have seen this. it is in the down position and if i turn it gas leaks our a bit. there is also a air nozzle connected to the red lever switch.

ok this this is what i have done. i replaced the fuel filter. which i removed the new one because it was leaking a bit and noticed that gas does not freely flow thru it. maybe this is they way it works but not sure.

i have also replaced the vro rvo or fuel pump what ever you want to call it.

any more ideas would be appreciated.

thanks

Re: Alarm sound

a continuous alarm is an overheat warning alarm. In your case you may have a short to ground on the alarm wire or a bad sender.

Re: Alarm sound

Come on if you can't spell it how did you manage to replace it. :D Are you sure you hooked it up right. Might be worth checking out a diagram and making sure. Does it smoke continuously even at wot?

Re: Alarm sound

Disconnect the wires to the vacumn switch then try it again. Alarm, lots of smoke, cold engine = fuel restriction.

Re: Alarm sound

Your remote oil tank has a faulty float switch, prove it by tracing the wires back to the motor and disconnecting one or both of them. Turn on key, if now no alarm then order a new oil tank pick-up assy.

Re: Alarm sound

Sounds like you need a manual. Perhaps the alarm codes vary alot with model. From what I understand
continuous= overheat
intermittent=no oil
beep every 40 sec.=low oil level

Trace your alarm wires they are tan usually.

Re: Alarm sound

I have 1996 Johnson ocean runner and am troubleshooting similar problem. My check engine light and alarm come on and the engine loses power. Check engine constant alarm when running indicates fuel restriction. I have found the same leak around the primer solenoid to be a cracked red manual lever. This problem is very common and the part and o rings are available to fix. Remove the 4 screws and lift off the top. Hold the top and pull on the lever. It is supposed to come out and will have 2 o rings on it. This has not solved my problem and I'm contemplating replacing the vro fuel pump..but it is over $300 dollars. If you pump up the primer bulb and it still lacks power it should eliminate the hoses and fuel tank. I am going to look in the float bowl first and see what that looks like first. There is gas there though because when I push the choke the gas was pouring out the red lever.
I'll keep you posted on my progress.
