1967 EVINRUDE 60 HP MODEL 60733

I seem to have trouble starting the motor, it cranks and cranks. It is hard to start , but will start and run fine.
I noticed the fuel bowl not filling up all the way at bottom of carb.

( note the fuel pump and carb. have been rebuilt - with no difference in problem).

The tanks are in good condition no leaks and new hose.

** second problem i have the type of carb with only two low speed needles at top the highspeed are fixed.

I can only get the motor to start after a lot cranking with needles turn out four turns and lube up bendix start gear. i have read the adjust procedure in faq. ..this don't seem to work for carb. I have cleaned out the crab 3 times and checked out...this is not my fist carb rebuild, suggesting that hard starting problem and high needle setting, and lack of suction to pull gas into the fuel bowl may be seal problem with crank shaft seals.

History of motor when got it
The motor would only 5-10 mph, it was out of time, with bad carb.float flooding gas mix through motor when got.

i got fixed up dose 25-30mph - just hard to start

What do you guys think?

For one thing I think don't waste your time worrying about the empty glass bowl. They ALWAYS run empty. Capillary action or something.

If you are positive the carb is clean and that the choke is closing tight it probably isn't fuel related. Make sure about that choke.

I have checked the choke per manual it seem closed correct/ tight.

I am thinking upper and lower seals?

- it has been cleaned out with seafoam, so not carbon problem. plus replace all hoses.

I am at loss as way so hard to start.

Use a sqeeze bottle of pre-mix fuel to spray down the carb throats', if the engine starts right up, you have a fuel delivery problem in the idle circuit of the carb. How far open is the throttle plate when you are in the start position? It should be barely cracked open.

Re: Evinrude 60 Hp Starting Problems

Has anyone ever found the replacing the crankshaft seals and block half seals or sealant to help with problems likes this?

I rebuilt a 15 and 5 did both that way plus new leaf seals , it seems to help the problem for those to motors

It would be a great surprise if the seals are causing a problem.
