Johnson 40HP 1960 -RDS 22 CC/gear problem

Help I need somebody Help,
I just bought a Nylox 14" from 1960 with a Johnson 40HP same year. My problem is it will not go in rewerse, then I adjusted the cable and was able to go in rewerse, but after running it for 15 min on the lake. it wouldnt? any ideas, or should I simply replace it with a new engine it does 25 mph full ( 1 person) does that sound right, does the motor have any value.cc

welcome. i think you need to disconnect cable at the motor, and shift manually. problem is probably a bad cable. forward is a pulling movement on the cable, reverse, is a pushing movement, if the cable is bad, you do not get the "throw" required to move the shift in the motor.

Check the shift linkage adjustment.

Youl will do about 25mph given a regular load and not oversized 350 pounds persons.
