I remember someone (I think it was TasshaDaddy) posting the proper way to start a cold motor. The 1975 70 Evinrude I bought with the Cobia dont start quite as fast as I am use to from other motors. After it start it runs great. Then if I kill it and wait form time it will take time to start again. Im talking about one or 2 minutes, but i am use to the Babcock 1969 Merc that start in 10 secs cold crank and from then on it start in 3 secs crank.
I doubt I have a problem with the carbs as they have been rebuilt by me a few months ago. Pump and other aspects of the fuel system and ignition system appears ok. Yesterday I flood it cuz the choke stuck. Im watching for that know but i know is not the same problem cuz i could smell the gas. Any advice is welcome.

I have a 1975 70hp johnson, that has a toggle switch for the choke right below the ignition key. It shouldn't take very long to start a couple seconds, I usually turn the key a little hit the toggle once to choke hear the choke click, move the warm up lever up just enough for it to click then turn the key, starts up then I increase the warm up lever to about half way. It sounds like your not choking it if it takes that long to start.

Sorry you must be choking it if the choke stuck, is the choke that stuck on the engine or on the throttle controls? The choke on the engine should be similar to mine and have three options, Choke On, Automatic Choke, and Choke Off. That could be the problem, it should be on Automatic Choke. Mine stalled while idling around a lake and it took about 5 minutes for me to figure out that it needed to be in automatic choke.

as said the choke has 3 setting, push all the way in, is off, 1 click out is auto, so it can be activated from remote. all the way out is manual, and the choke plate is closed, and will flood the motor quickly. should be in middle postion.

Re: Proper Cold Start Procedure for Evinrude

I have it set up in auto. The choke was stuck in the carb assembly, not by the electronic switch or the mechanical setting. I probably need to take the cover off tomorrow while I am turning it on and see if the problem is the choke getting stuck. I am hard hearing and cant barely hear it click on this Evinrude. I have no problem hearing the mercruiser thouh, that sucker does a loud click, or should I say clack!!!

I follow the same procedure I have with my mercruiser. I prime the bulb until hard, advance the warm up level, hit the choke toggle and hold it while I crank it. If it hear it do any sound like it is starting I take the choke off and crank it again.

I need to recheck, probably the choke is just getting stuck...
