On the shaft there should be one shaft going into the other (these are not technical terms as I'm sure you can tell). On the female shaft near the bottom there might be a little screw (hex). You should be able to loosen that then slide down the smaller shaft a bit. That's if its anything like the one I have now.

Re: motorguide trolling motor question

Measure the diameter of the smaller of the two shafts. Measure the current length of the smaller shaft. Add the amount length that you need to that measurement and buy a length of stainless tubing that diameter. Remove the shaft from the motor and replace it with the longer one. You will also need to lengthen the wires that go down the tube and make darned sure the shaft is sealed where it goes into the motor. Failure to do this will fill the motor housing with water and ruin it. I would strongly suggest you sell the motor and buy one with the proper length shaft.

As for the manual, your motor is a MotorGuide. The obvious place to start is MotorGuide. They may even have PDFs on their web site. Otherwise, there is always Craigs List and E-bay.

The manuals on the MotorGuide webstie are kinda generic but there is a parts diagram for a 730 on this site:

Look under the 1996 tab.

I really doubt anyone other than MotorGuide is going to publish a manual (user or service) that is any more detailed than the one MotorGuide publishes. What would be the point? You couldn't sell enough of them to pay for the printing much less a writer and layout people to create it in the first place.
