Any idea on what Oil mixture for this motor? I put in some 24:1 mixture and it pops but wont fire. The control arm doesn't show where to put it when trying to start. As in: Stop-Start-Neutral-Slow-fast. I am just guessing it is in that order from left to right. Haven't tried new plugs yet but will tomorrow. being 60 years old it might not start but shows signs of trying. Dual Spark plugs on this also.

It has a control arm, a needle value I guess that opens the gas to the carb and then it has the Prime-Rich-lean-Off control and when i prime it and give it a pull it pops.

There is no Neutral on your 48 Sea King. It's direct drive, pull the rope it starts and away you go...be sure you have clear water ahead. For reverse you just turn it 180 degrees. When you're looking at the motor imagine a clock face. Stop is somewhere around 8 o'clock, slow somewhere near 7, start is about 5:30 and fast is all the way to the right. It should be okay on 24:1, but 16:1 was the recommended mix when it was made. No TCW marine oils back then, auto oils were used. Check compression before you toss any $$ into it, should have 70 lbs. or more in each cylinder. Anything above 80 in both is real good. Run some seafoam through the tank with fresh gas to help clean it out and decarbon the innards. They are stout, reliable little motors. I'm partial to the 51-54 models.

Re: 1948 Sea King

Thanks for the info. I finally got it running after cleaning it up a little more my Grandson was able to read the fine print with instructions. I wasn't priming it long enough to start it. I let it run for about 5 minutes and all looks good. No smoke from it either. Now it starts on the first pull. I will have a friend of mine do a compression test for me. One thing about the oil. It says 1 pint of 30w to 1 gallon of gas. That I would be 8:1 wouldn't it? And I would guess back in 1948 it would have been non-detergent oil. Is the 8:1 or 16:1 OK still?

I think I would ask over at the www.aomci.org site. Some of the early Gale built motors were a pint to a gallon.I would think 16:1 with TCW3 rated oil would work but you better check with them.

Re: 1948 Sea King

I made a mistake. My grandson said it was 1/2 pint 30 W per gallon of gas. So that is 16:1. I found non-detergent 30 W at Walmart. Thanks guys for your help.
