Mercury 50HP Thunderbolt HELP PLEASE

Hi, Great site, first time posting here.

I just bought my first (used) 16' fibreglass boat with console steering. I had her out on the water and found these problems...

1) The steering is very stiff, it's like trying to park a 1972 Dodge Dart without power steering!
2) Engine was very loud (expected) but it has no speed, my friend has a 8HP tiller aluminum boat and she's quicker then my 50 HP. I was the only one on the boat and I had no other gears other than my safety, the gas tank was only a quarter full.

Before I purchase the boat, I asked the owner if the boat can pull my 13 years old son on a tube, he said no problem, I can even pull two kids with the 50 horse. But now she's going 5 mph full speed.

I was talking to a guy at the marina and he said my boat should go at least 25 mph. What should I do? Did I buy a lemon?

Thanks very much for your help in advance...The boating season is so short here in Ontario, Canada:confused::confused:.

when u say motor is loud does it revs high but does not move if this is the case gearbox trouble or wrong prop on it .is motor in water properly don,t laugh i heard it before bad trim setting ,as for steering undo at motor and see if motor turns freely if so needs new cable if not motor seized at steering tube try grease in nipples and work loose
