Anyone know where i can get the water pump kit for a 1968 Evinrude 65hp Sport Four?

It looks like the part number is 379776, i searched iboats and nothing. I checked ebasicpower.com and nothing.

I can't seem to find it anywhere!

Napa can't cross it, i called one marine store, the only one we have locally actually, and they said if it ain't mercury they can find and special order it but that's going to cost extra.. Sucks...

After reading through all the horror stories of overheating outboards, getting stranded out on the lake, i want to replace the water pump just as preventative maintenance since this outboard has been sitting a few years. We had it running last year and the water pump seemed to be working, but it wasn't being worked hard just idling, the last thing i want is a shredded water pump impeller out on the lake.

Also on the same subject, anyone have a how to on dropping the lower unit to access the pump on this outboard?

Seems to me the cost of a manual is pretty outrageous, if i'm going to spend $45 on a manual i might as well be buying the pump for that much!

The BRP Part Catalogs also mention an impeller repair kit..

379769

Looks like the only difference is it doesn't include the actual pump housing itself, that would work also and cost a lot less, but i can't find this available for sale anywhere either.

Spend the 45 bucks on the manual - it will be the best money you have ever spent for on your motor. The aftermarket manuals are the pits and will leave you cussing, because they don't provide enough information for most people to have a complete understanding of what needs to be done.

Re: 65hp Sport Four Water Pump??

I've been contemplating it, but the one place i found with a manual that actually cover this says its on back order until mid august... Poop...

Can someone just give me a quick rundown on this??

I know i need to remove the bolts holding on the lower unit, that much is obvious, but there was mention in another thread on here about removing that small oblong cover on the one side and having to remove something in there?

And i think it was mentioned it needed to be put in forward gear?

Come on guys help me out here, i can't wait till august to get a stupid manual!!

Have you tried eBay for the manual? Chances are it is there. I have bought original factory service manuals there with no problem. Also remember that many Johnson and Evinrudes are identical except for cosmetics.

I think you can also obtain original reprints of manuals here on iboats.

Looks like about $30 plus shipping on iBoats and eBay, still about $40..

I just find it hard to justify $40 to fix one thing and then toss it on the shelf. I used to buy service manuals for every vehicle i bought, i still got a shelf full of expensive useless manuals now, tried selling them on eBay but they just wouldn't sell...

Back to web hunting for info.

Yep, i'm cheap, but when you got a family of five you have to be!

Re: 65hp Sport Four Water Pump??

I got this project completed today, what a pain...

First of all you have to remove the cover on the side, then another cover behind that, and then remove the screw that holds the lower shift linkage into the coupler. So far so easy. Then just remove all the bolts and wiggle and pull and the lower unit comes off.

I replaced the water pump impeller and all the gaskets, new o-ring on the top end of the shaft, all of it came with the kit. The only problem i came across is the kit doesn't include the correct rubber grommet for the water tube that goes into the top of the pump. The kit came with one that was a different shape and wouldn't fit into the pump. I looked up the part number online and that grommet isn't correct, so i don't know what happened but it's too late to wait for another part so i just cleaned and re-used the old one. It was in good shape, still soft and pliable and not cracked, shouldn't be a problem.

Now, putting this lower unit back on, thats the fun part. I think all my neighbors, within earshot, heard a few unmentionable phrases. There is no easy way that i could find to line up the water tubes while also lining up the shift linkage if your working on it alone. I pushed the shift lever fully forward which moves the upper linkage rod in the motor upward and almost out of the way, and then i pushed the rod in the lower unit down so i finally had enough clearance to get the lower unit on and start a couple bolts to hold it all in place so the water tubes wouldn't fall out again when it slipped back out, did that like two dozen times at this point.

Then i got help from my oldest son to move the shift lever in the boat while i used a screwdriver and needle nose pliers to line up the lower linkage with the coupler as he moved it to reverse, this took a few tries and i finally got it lined up and started but it didn't want to go in, a few more tries later and it popped into place in the coupler. Then i tightened that up and moved it through its entire range a half dozen times to make sure all was well and it looked good.

Then its just a matter of reinstalling both of those little side covers and your done. It was well worth the effort but what a pain, they could have designed that better i think.

I also drained and refilled the lower unit gear lube, and put new spark plugs in while i was spending some time on the outboard today. Not ready to start it yet, but getting a lot closer. Still have to get a barrel or garbage can big enough to put it in and i have to finish a few other things on the boat before i have time to tinker with the outboard some more, but its getting closer!!
