35hp powerhead removal

I can't seem to get the powerhead off my '89 35hp Force. The manual says there are six bolts on the flange, but I only find five. I removed them and the shock mount nuts, hold-down screws and bolts from the upper shock mount cover. Everything the manual says. The lower unit is already off. I tried prying around thinking maybe the seal was just stuck, but it feels more "connected" than just a seal. I even turned it upside and tried to pull the midsection off but it won't budge. WTF?

If your 35 has an idle relief tube (long aluminum piece with a tube about 3/4 inch diameter protruding from about the middle.) bolted onto the midleg with two bolts, remove that and you will find another bolt inside going up into the block.

Don't see anything like you describe and no mention of it in the manual (factory manual, not Clymer or Seloc.) Here's some pics.

Betting it is just stuck to the driveshaft.

Re: 35hp powerhead removal

I know the manual says 6 bolts. Can't remember ever pulling the powerhead on a 35.

I would remove the lower unit, and try to rock the powerhead back and forth. Maybe that would give a hint to where the bolt is.

Re: 35hp powerhead removal

Went out to my shed tonight and dug into my 35 hp.
Sorry, can't offer any insight.

Thanks for the effort Roscoe. I just can't believe there's nobody on "The #1 Site for Everything Boating" that can help me with this:confused:

These motors were my specialty back in the mid '70's but I can't remember that far back.
At first I was going to suggest that the drive shaft spline was frozen in the crankshaft but then you wouldn't have been able to remove the lower unit.
Since you have a manual and have remove all the fasteners accordingly I can only offer that the gasket is the problem.
Maybe some mechanic applied some strong sealant to both gasket sides in the past and now you are paying for it.

Good Luck,

Thank you CaptRon! You were exactly correct. I had to turn the thing upside down and then, behind the front shock mount is the only area of the joint accessible, I cut into the gasket repeatedly with a razor knife until I could get the tip of the ubiquitous Craftsman 3/8" screwdriver/prybar in enough to pry the midsection off the powerhead.

If anyone is looking for a 35hp Force powerhead, I will be listing it on eBay later today.

Thanks again!

Re: 35hp powerhead removal

And, why are you selling the powerhead separately?
Why not the whole motor?

Compression on top cyl is only 100. Bottom is 125. I used this motor all last summer and it still runs pretty good. I tried selling it complete; honestly stating the compression issue and nobody wanted to give me what I felt it was worth. I can make more parting it out. I've already sold the controls, lower unit and prop for more than the best offer I had for the complete motor:)

Re: 35hp powerhead removal

Any other tricks to that removal? I have a 50hp '89 ss and a 35 hp ls installed on my boat currently. Mine 35 runs well and has even compression. I should probably leave a good thing alone but I'm contemplating transplanting the powerheads in them. Same bolt patterns. Ever hear of anyone doing this?
