My mother and I were packed up and ready to head for my uncle Joe's lot on the lake last Thursday night, we were just about to step out the door when we got a phone call from my sis n law saying "our uncle had drivin his 855 John Deere tractor off into the lake". She needed us to contact my uncle's wife, we got up there to find out that my sis n law must of found the wife's phone number finally because the wife (my aunt) new about it already.

My 61 year old uncle was mowing his lot and his neighbors with a tractor and a 3 point hitch mower, there is a pretty steep hill that he tried to turn the tractor around on and he miss judged his turn and was going to fast and he went right off a 4 (to 5) foot bank and off into the lake.

The tractor didn't flip completely over, but once it got down the steep bank it rolled over on it's side and pinned my uncle underneath the water. He was under the water for 4 to 5 minutes. My other uncle and a neighbor witnessed the accident. The neighbor was the first person to make it to my trapped uncle. The other uncle (Dale) dove in from a dock and helped the neighbor lift the tractor off of my uncle, which they could only lift it to a point but they did get him out.

They borrowed a float and once they got him free they placed him on the float and brought him down the bank, he was basically dead he was blue around the lips etc etc. They (the neighbor and Dale) performed mouth to mouth and CPR on my uncle, and he finally responded and coughed up water.

When we finally got to the lake (which is about 45 minutes away from our house), the paramedics had already came and left, which we did pass one who must of gotten another call. My uncle did not go with them, he stayed and some how managed to change his we clothes. He thought he was going to be fine until he started coughing up blood, then he realized he wasn't well at all. He had water in the lungs. So once his wife showed up, she and a couple of others rushed him to the hospital with a call to the police to let them know they were going to half to travel at high speeds. They brought him to a hospital about an hour (or take a few if your doing the speed limit). He did not have any interal injuries that we know of, he was put in ICU through out the whole weekend and just got put into a room today.

It was not the same spending the holiday without him around :(, his wife, sun and sun's family did come up and stay at the lake along with other relatives.

It took two wreckers to winch that tractor out of the water (at night). I'm thankful that none of the kids witnessed the accident. I helped when I could and the next morning we pulled the damaged tractor up on the trailer and later on my brother drove the uncle's truck with tractor home which I picked him up and brought him back after dropping off my newly purchased boat by my house.

I hope that my uncle doesn't have any relapses, and I hope to see him back to normal soon. The only thing he could remember was sucking in all of that lake water. Uncle Joe is well known around our area due to his land scaping business.

Re: Been a scarry weekend!

Much appreciated guys. I didn't add that when I was making the purchase on the boat I mentioned, the owner (Roger) started to make me out a bill of sale when all of a sudden his wife came out crying in a panic hollering to Roger "there is something wrong with Jake". I figured it was Roger's son, because he does have a son (but I didn't know his name or couldn't remember it).

Come to find out that Roger's wife was talking about the family dog which is a big old Rot. I stuck around to see if they needed help. Ran back through the chicken house (where the boat was stored) to get an out of area phone book out of my truck so they could call a vet. By the time I got back she already was on the phone with a vet.

They loaded up the dog and took off to town to try and save the dog which might of been poisoned or bitten by a snake.

Then another friend of the family was out of state water skiing at her friends house when one of the skis flipped up and hit her right in the face, fracturing several bones in her face. She too was also in the hospital all weekend.

Been a heck of a holiday weekend. We managed to get some fishing in, my normal fishing buddy (besides my brother), my uncle Dale didn't feel up to fishing much at all after being involved in rescueing his brother from the tractor accident, he lost his perscription glasses and hurt his back while diving in and lifting the tractor. He only went fishing with me once.

Holy smokes....thats crazy....did your uncle refuse to go to the hospital? I would think that drowning and being rescucitated would qualify for a mandatory free ride to the hospital.??? I mean was it like "oh by the way I drowned today but I feel fine now, thanks for comin' out boys"

Thanks so much guys. My brother got to visit uncle Joe yesterday and from my brother's observation he said "Joe still looks rough" (or something like that).

I'm suposed to recieve pictures of the tractor while it was in the water, but I haven't gotten yet to my knowledge.

RWilson, my uncle is like my father, hard headed. So instead of having the ambulance with flashing lights and automatic right of way, they took my aunt's mini van and did 90 miles per hour to rush him to the hospital. Once they got to the hospital uncle Joe was barley able to breath. Uncle Joe finally realized that he needed to go to the hospital after all when he started coughing up blood. My brother was sitting with him when he started coughing up blood and my brother asked him if "he was ready to go to the hospital", which Uncle Joe replied "yes". My brother kept that to himself so he wouldn't put anybody in a panic.

again...holy smokes....I was just thinking at the time that the ambulance people would make him go but I guess if you are up and talking and probably telling them that you're fine I guess they would leave it up to the person.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Re: Been a scarry weekend!

What was is with this past weekend, My sister, her two grown kids with their two children and a friend drove out to the lake here, for a weekend of fun with the boat, I get a call from my nephew on Fri. morning,"Uncle Dave, no one is hurt" but Julie Wrecked the van and they are out on Highway, would you caravan with me(he has my Sisters small car) and drive out and pick them(with luggage)? Ok I start out on the way I get another call, "Uncle Dave, the car is on fire" I ask, (thinking it's wrecked anyway) Is everyone out) No not their car! Mine! Now He (Nephew) Is on the same highway, behind me some miles, on fire. Car burned to the ground. No one hurt in all this,Thank God,But what a Fourth! Dave

Sometimes it is very diffult for the EMS team to let the patient sign the release forms and go on their way. I know many times we will say, "get ready, we will be coming back soon." but there is nothing that can be done if the patient is able to refuse treatment, we must comply. If they are well enough to sign the waiver, they are well enough to make their own decisions about medical treatment.

And WOW! Just didn't envision the tractor that way!

And Bigdaveaz ... OMG! It always seems to come in bunches!

Dang Wildmanimal!
After reading what happened, that picture was very spooky.
on the plus side, I know your uncles were very thankful that they were present when it happened and able to save him. I need to learn CPR myself.... That story is certainly proof that everyone needs to know how.
Hope your unc. gets well soon,
JBJ

Re: Been a scarry weekend!

I didn't mention that once they got him on a float and down the bank there was still no way to get him up so they used uncle Joe's pontoon boat and managed to get him on board and brought him around so they could get him to land easier.

As far as I know of he is still in the hospital. I haven't got to check on him lately. They might not let him go until he gets rid of that pneumonia, don't know if his other reading (like suger etc etc) is alright or not, if that isn't reading normal they may not let him go because of that also.
