My mother and I were packed up and ready to head for my uncle Joe's lot on the lake last Thursday night, we were just about to step out the door when we got a phone call from my sis n law saying "our uncle had drivin his 855 John Deere tractor off into the lake". She needed us to contact my uncle's wife, we got up there to find out that my sis n law must of found the wife's phone number finally because the wife (my aunt) new about it already.
My 61 year old uncle was mowing his lot and his neighbors with a tractor and a 3 point hitch mower, there is a pretty steep hill that he tried to turn the tractor around on and he miss judged his turn and was going to fast and he went right off a 4 (to 5) foot bank and off into the lake.
The tractor didn't flip completely over, but once it got down the steep bank it rolled over on it's side and pinned my uncle underneath the water. He was under the water for 4 to 5 minutes. My other uncle and a neighbor witnessed the accident. The neighbor was the first person to make it to my trapped uncle. The other uncle (Dale) dove in from a dock and helped the neighbor lift the tractor off of my uncle, which they could only lift it to a point but they did get him out.
They borrowed a float and once they got him free they placed him on the float and brought him down the bank, he was basically dead he was blue around the lips etc etc. They (the neighbor and Dale) performed mouth to mouth and CPR on my uncle, and he finally responded and coughed up water.
When we finally got to the lake (which is about 45 minutes away from our house), the paramedics had already came and left, which we did pass one who must of gotten another call. My uncle did not go with them, he stayed and some how managed to change his we clothes. He thought he was going to be fine until he started coughing up blood, then he realized he wasn't well at all. He had water in the lungs. So once his wife showed up, she and a couple of others rushed him to the hospital with a call to the police to let them know they were going to half to travel at high speeds. They brought him to a hospital about an hour (or take a few if your doing the speed limit). He did not have any interal injuries that we know of, he was put in ICU through out the whole weekend and just got put into a room today.
It was not the same spending the holiday without him around
, his wife, sun and sun's family did come up and stay at the lake along with other relatives.
It took two wreckers to winch that tractor out of the water (at night). I'm thankful that none of the kids witnessed the accident. I helped when I could and the next morning we pulled the damaged tractor up on the trailer and later on my brother drove the uncle's truck with tractor home which I picked him up and brought him back after dropping off my newly purchased boat by my house.
I hope that my uncle doesn't have any relapses, and I hope to see him back to normal soon. The only thing he could remember was sucking in all of that lake water. Uncle Joe is well known around our area due to his land scaping business.
