Mercrusier Alpha One Power Problem

Hello there,

I need help as I'm no expert on sterndrives. I own a 1996 Alpha One 3.0 liter. Everything has been perfect with the motor until yesterday. I was pulling a tuber, probably going around 3/4 speed when all of sudden it lost power. The motor did not stall, but basically went down to just above idle speed. I pulled back on the throttle and moved it forward again but it didn't make a difference. Still no power So I put it in neutral and had a look out the back. What I noticed was water seems to be coming upwards now from the top of the drive near the transom. Hard to explain but right above where the stern drive goes up and down (just below the Mercrusier label) water seems to be coming out from there. I know it never did this before. I slowly made it back to shore with the throttle 3/4's open, but the boat only moving maybe 5 miles per hour. I'm lost. Anyone have any ideas. I would really appreciate any feedback.

I agree with Bond-o, sounds like you spun a hub on the prop.

The motor was only turning 700 rpms, but the throttle was 3/4 open.

Is it normal to have water coming from the drive?

No, it is not......
Pull the sparkplugs, ground the coil lead & turn the engine over to make sure you have no water in the cylinders.....
Can you post a pic of where the water was coming out of the drive?.....
It is hard to diagnose whether or not it is normal based on your description......
Welcome to iboats, btw.....:)
